spintop : semantics
« on: June 06, 2018, 03:58:32 PM »

hi all ! I was discussing with a former student about his studies in translation: he specializes in simultaneous translation in french english spanish and even italian (...)and i finally got to think about this question :
what is the gender of tops ?

in English there is no gender for common words
the car the truck or a tree a flower

contrary to French
la voiture (feminine)le camion (masculine)  / un arbre une fleur

in other languages the gender is sometimes present
even if there are differences:
in German the sun is feminine in French it's masculine

trottola feminine
trompo masculine
toupie feminine
topak masculine

other inputs ?
koma ?
tujlup ?
péonza ?
zvoura ?

The throw top is masculine but a pump top is feminine, in my opinion.  ::)

The throw top is masculine but a pump top is feminine, in my opinion.  ::)

How one maps gender onto an inanimate object must reflect habit of thought to some extent.

Since my wife watches a lot of Dancing with the Stars, where the females are always the ones getting thrown around and spun up, I'm more inclined to see throw tops as feminine.

The fact that I can only imagine pump tops as feminine, no matter how hard I try, says even more about my habits of thought. Yours, too.

hello friends

How one maps gender onto an inanimate object must reflect habit of thought
you're right jeremy :  a pump top is like a dancer with a long skirt floating around

speaking of habits of thought :
I have often experienced spinomorphism when strolling around in a DIY/hardware store >:D

I see that your habits of thought are a lot more suited to general audiences than mine. ;)

Tell me about it! Since becoming addicted to tops, and modular tops in particular, I seem to look at everything below a certain size as a potential part for a top or top starter.

Wonderful drawings, ta0 -- clearly from a time when tops themselves were widespread habits of thought.

Not sure what to make of the middle one, though. Maybe we lack some needed context, but at least they're both smiling.
