You really worked on that Kickstarter project! Everything looks very smooth and professional.

It's obvious that you put a lot of thought into the design of the tops.
Unfortunately, I think it's going to be difficult to achieve your goal. The price point is a problem: us$100 for a shell plus a starter (including shipping to the US), is substantial. I'm sure they are costly to make and you priced them accordingly. But the killer is that to battle you need at least two shells and two spinners. Furthermore, beyblade players are accustomed to having many tops.

Thanking you always! But oh man, this past fortnight has been an exercise in getting my teeth kicked in. You could probably tell from the lack of updates, right?

My biggest supporting group has always been the WBO (the World Beyblade Organisation) probably because that's where my blog is based. I was counting on those guys to form the bulk of my audience and I had been promised some dedicated space by the mods there to host my outreach campaign. The numbers were actually looking really good in the hours following the launch but for some unexplained reason, the WBO pulled support less than 24hrs into the campaign. In a really nasty way, too. Basically system-shocked my entire campaign plan domino-style.

Suffice to say with my biggest audience cut off, I've been running around (between conventions) trying to adjust the figures to see if the campaign is still viable... Which saps even more time from the outreach component... Anyway, this whole thing has basically become another "blame someone else for your failed Kickstarter" and without wanting to spend too much time wandering down that road, I figure I'll just re-launch the project and try to make my money back as best I can.

This essentially means reworking the campaign for a slightly different audience:

  • Dropping support for the "Combat Automata" gameplay system.
  • No more "unlock" features.
  • Fewer rewards tiers.
  • Reduced funding goal.
  • Same estimated delivery date.

Yeah. Ouch. But you know, the real fun to be had here is in building your own fighting top from a kit. Then rebuilding it. Then designing and building your own. When was the last time you did that!? I do agree with your sentiment, Ta0, that the "gaming" requirement for multiple tops kind of stymied the point of that fun. Maybe worth noting that the gameplay system originally grew out of the existing fighting top community. So now, of course, it has to go.

I mean, how many people have wanted to build their own real fighting combat robot? That's essentially what you get with Silver Shell - just in miniature and analogue. The journey is in the build - as close to magic as you can get without electricity. In that sense, Silver Shell is largely a single-player game, no matter how many rules you put on top of it. I worked hard on those rules - but I really just want to give the backers what they pledged for and I understand the need for change.

You can preview the new project layout at the following link. It's broken right now (garrrgh!) but the Kickstarter support team assures me it will be fixed soon. It's fixed and ready to go!

Personally, I'm more interested in the starter than the shells. It looks like I could easily adapt it to other tops. But a starter by itself is not a pledge option.

I've not forgotten this. I want to see how the campaign re-launch goes initially and I hope to collect feedback like this to potentially add specialist pledge tiers in the later days. It's just that specialist tiers too early can apparently confuse the "browsing" folk. But I'm more than happy to do this, so I'll let you know when we're good to go with new options. Yes?

Anyone else want to see anything specific in the campaign?

Also! I wanted to highlight a couple of other spinning top campaigns happening right now:

There's the Nimbus, which the lovely DB has already posted about.

A Jack Williams project from New Zealand.

And the UltraSPIN! by one of our favourites.

I think the range and variety of different styles (both the tops and the marketing) is really interesting. Taken together with my own Kickstarter, the prices are all over the place. The vibe for each campaign is pretty varied too. But essentially we're all selling one thing: spinning tops. And look how much money each one earned in the first 48 hours. Very... Very... Interesting.

Wow, okay, the preview link is fixed:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/446060579/973425568?ref=1kp8il&token=4527c35a

You can go here and preview the re-launch if you like. Pledges aren't active yet but feel free to mention if it's missing something you'd like (like the power unit only pledge - which is really helpful feedback). The re-launch will be this Friday 9th February but I'll post again just in case.

Got a couple of youtube reviews lined up too, so hopefully that works out...

Well as promised, the Silver Shell relaunch is live, so hopefully it works out with the fixes:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/446060579/silver-shell-fighting-tops

We're already 30% funded, but it may take a few extra days to recover the original backers. I feel for them. Good news being the average pledge amount has actually gone up since the re-launch. I guess the full set looks pretty nice together:

Each kit is between 45 and 46 grams and between 40 and 50 mm diameter. It's difficult to describe just how detailed these kits are without pictures, so I might post a few from the campaign when I get a chance.

One curious update from the relaunch is the final version of "Crypto", a more traditional beigoma-type shell based on the ubiquitous Asian deity Genbu, or Xuan Wu in China, and a distant relative of Kurma in India. Crypto guards itself inside its outer shell, absorbing impacts and inflicting high recoil on would-be attackers.

50% funded in the first 48 hours!

Well, the relaunch is on track. You can see the progress at the Kickstarter page. And I have some awesome news: the updated Power Unit has arrived!

It works the same as always but is slightly wider, with a larger feeder and finger-grips for a stronger hold. A little enhanced functionality never goes astray, I reckon.

90% FUNDED

10 DAYS LEFT!

Got some reviews up! People are starting to learn that these things are serious fighting machines! Big thanks to everyone who helped put this outreach campaign together - you guys are the best!

So basically you can see here how they perform in a fight, using a Beyblade stadium. The reviewers are actually using Beyblade launchers too, which is pretty weird. The old Beyblade launchers have "J" shaped prongs while the Silver Shell Power Unit has "C" shaped hooks, so the two are not actually compatible. But... They made it work. So good on them. I guess that's kind of the point of a "totally modular" set of fighting top gear, in a way.

Hey, you are fully funded! Congratulations!
Those youtube reviews by illinuc and JoJo should certainly help a lot!

Yeah, it's a pity neither of them used your launcher.  :-\

A couple of modified fighting tops from the campaign to prove this system actually works.

Thanks! Yeah, it's good to finally be able to cover my costs. Hopefully we can put a little more together and unlock some new designs down the road. Priority now is to increase the number of actual backers - everyone is pledging for the top tier options!

Did you still want a "launcher only" pledge option? It's coming up to the final week, so I'm starting to organise all the extra stuff.
