spinning cubes
« on: January 19, 2018, 07:02:25 PM »

The first cube spinning tops I ever saw were made by Don Olney. Here are some metal versions:

What I have not seen but should work well, is a cube spinning top with the stem going in a direction different from the corners or the face centers of the cube. In theory a cube would be balanced when rotating around any axis that goes through its center.

Here are some cube tops from The Toycrafter (with a candy-display for flipovers) I got on my visit to his place:

I don't know if Don invented them or if he saw the idea somewhere.

The metal cube tops are amazing to watch when they are spinning.  What wonderful illusions.  I also have some of Don's cube tops.  I wonder if he was the inventor?
