New guy here
« on: December 05, 2017, 04:13:22 PM »

Hey everyone, ScottR here I've been what some people might call lurking on the forum for more than a few months now. And I have just been looking for new top idea and hints and tips and tricks and what ever. I've been throwing tops since the spring of 2017 when my brother by the username jatt had purchased a few tops. And BOOM! The addiction started. I'm more of a fixed tip guy  over bearings tips. I actually almost never throw bearing tip. I just like the challenge of fixed so yeah. And here is a few pics of some of my latest tops.

I actually don't have a metal lathe, I wish I did. I have a collet chuck that I use to make duck call barrels with. So yeah I buy 5/8 steel rod and some old wood chisels and a file. All by hand. It's fun be able to turn them by hand though I don't mind it.

I made a 10.0 top with a straight tip because I wanted to do wire walkers and stairway to heaven. The top can do it, but I think that is the max for a straight tip. My new one I'm making will be about 13 7/8 diameter and it will be a double bearing. That's if I can ever get on a big lathe again?

Hey cecil, man I've been wanting a bigger lathe as well. The one I have been looking at is the nova 1624. It has 360 degree swivel head stock, 16" over the bed, and capable of 29" when turned out, and I think it has a 1.50 or 1.75 hp motor. I think it's just under 900$. It may have 24 position index, I always thought it would be cool to make a perforated top. It's a pretty steep price though. You know what one of these days I'll be willing to pay that price. And there's nothing like making Square things round and round things Hollow. I bet it's even better on a machine like that

I've been looking at that lathe myself. I would love to have it. It's a good investment.
