FIFA World Cup 2018
« on: November 18, 2017, 04:48:14 PM »

USA didn't qualify but other countries well represented on the forum will be in Russia. France looks very strong. So does Spain. Mexico could do well.
The 8 initial groups will be determined by a draw December 1st by taking a team from each of these pots:

Uruguay has two world class strikers. This might be our last fair chance at a (another) title in my lifetime . . .

I don't really watch sports, but soccer(real football) would be the only one I would watch. Since nobody around here talks about the matches until after they are over... I can never catch games on TV.

I'm still kinda shocked Italy didn't make it.

My son Noah's club team is going to Europe in July to play several "Friendlies" against local clubs, and then heading to Russia to see some World Cup games.  I'm think of going along for the ride  ;D

Fantastic, Eric!  8)
July, not June? That would mean quarterfinals, semifinals and final!  :o
How did they get the tickets? Through the US federation or directly on the FIFA website?

I did get some tickets myself, but most likely (90%) I will return them. If I got offers to stay at Russian top spinners/jugglers houses, the chances would increase that I went.  ;)
One nice thing is that there are free train rides between the host cities, so it could be a good chance to visit some of the country.

Yes, for France and Uruguay it was a fine draw. Not so much for México.  Uruguay will have favorable traveling by being in the same group as Russia. However, in the final 16 stage, the elimination game will likely be against either Spain or Portugal.

It's getting close.

Uruguay probably has the best team it will have in my lifetime and the best chance of winning (it's still a long shot).
I'm generally not a big soccer football fan, but in Uruguay football is like a religion and the two world cups we won (1930 and 1950) are remembered with reverence.
In fact, two of my uncles were present in Maracana in 1950. So, every 4 years, when the world cup comes around, I get excited as every other Uruguayan.

So, after returning the first tickets I got in the random selection draw, I managed to get one which is a great deal: it's a Uruguay-conditional ("supporter") ticket for the FINAL! :o Only if Uruguay reaches the final it's valid, if not I receive a full refund (except for $10 processing). So, I will wait to see if Uruguay reaches deep in the tournament (probably semis) before buying a plane ticket. If it happens I will have to break the bank  :-[ , but one has only one life to live.

Today I got my FAN ID, which was free and serves as Russian visa, to take trains between hosting cities and as id for the stadium.

Seventy days until it starts!

Wow, those blocks are all over the place. Of group A, I only really see Uraguay having the top chance of making it through, followed by Russia. Group D seems like Argentina will take that one easy. Brazil in group E doesn't have the same dominance they used to have. For group F, Germany and Mexico will be likely fighting for top spot there. I think France will take group C, but Denmark could make them work hard for it. For Group G, England is the likely candidate but I am expending good performance from Belgium s well. With Group H, I see Japan and Colombia for that division, could go either way.

Hi all
what is fun, beyond the final results, is the way people communicate and connect especially
at a local level;I imagine in advance that group B will be a hot spot in paris where the Portuguese and Moroccan communities live together in many neighbourhoods : Spain will be the target!

for france we'll see : we have top players but we lack a group feeling

Getting really close!

The best Egyptian player, by far, got injured and might not able to compete. Uruguay has it really easy in the first round. I think there's a 50% chance France and Uruguay meet in the quarter finals.

Unfortunately, things have come up so even if Uruguay advances I might not be able to go  :( We'll see.

After the success of Costa Rica in the last world cup, I'm not surprised they are excited.
Just a few days to start!

Great Jim! The game here will be at 7AM and at 9AM arrives the truck of the moving company. So I will be watching the game on a TV on the floor.

After the 5-0 of Russia-Saudi Arabia, they should try to have a large goal differential. It should be fun.
