Football start
« on: July 12, 2017, 04:03:34 PM »

I sometimes do a foot start, which could be called a stepping start as I step on the top which exits spinning. Gerardo Montero invented the first version, which is an actual stomp (tromp?) on the top. In both cases the string only goes around the tip and it is used to hop the top in the air and start regens. I was reading a new book from Spain about tops (see post in the Spanish section: Juegos Colaborativos con Trompos) when I found this start that has an actual soccer kick:

In this case the string is wrapped around the top in a conventional way and the top ends spinning on the floor. I tried it with a similar top than in the photo (baldufa) and a thick string (cord). It took me a little while to figure it out but once I did it was easy to succeed. I also tried it with a Giulia and a thick cord (from a koma) and it somewhat worked. With a regular string it didn't work well. The string exits over the top and the top spins against the floor (when I tried the other way around, the top generally ended up spinning on the crown).

Did they hire a fashion model for the photos?  ;D

Here is another unusual throw from the book (left page).

The peg top is wrapped from the crown, like a gasing! I think you need the knob on the crownl. I don't believe it's possible with our regular tops. But I was successful with one similar to the one on the book and it spun well.

I've done that.

I don't think we'll see a video of her throwing. Probably neither of you! ;D

Clever presentation, that book: Everything looks more interesting with a pretty girl involved.

I am not performing but I do have cowboy boots. I could put my feet on the judges table  :P

I guess in American football there is also a kick (and the ball looks more like a top), so we can call it football start without anybody complaining it's a soccer start  :P

I was taught the football start some years ago by Toufik, who was a resident at the squatt "Le Carosse"
he was Algerian ,a very extreme guy whose god was Jack Daniels (...)he appears in this vid with a policeman outfit with raybans
