This morning, the return leg of our Colorado-Utah road trip brought us to the Powerhouse Science Center in Durango, CO, near the SW corner of the state. There I got to play with coolest thing EVER -- an augmented reality sandbox like this one at UCLA...

Hard-rock mining and smelting operations in Colorado were among the world's earliest adopters of AC electrical power. Tesla himself came here to oversee some of the installations. Much of the precious and base metal ore coming out of the San Juan Mountains during the Colorado gold (and silver and copper and zinc and lead) rush passed through the smelter in Durango, which as a result ended up with one of the world's earliest AC residential grids. The museum is housed in a beautifully preserved brick powerhouse from that era, ca. 1893. The coal came from the Four Corners area nearby.

The sand is real but a projector paints the contour lines. It seems that if you hover your hand above it becomes a rain cloud
