After much procrastination, I finally decided that today was the day I need to start learning to regenerate.  I have found the prospect to be intimidating, and have been avoiding taking the plunge.

After the expected repeated failures, I eventually began being able to catch the top (QSH fixed tip) on the string!  I think the style would be called roller coaster, as the tip comes up facing me.  Eventually, I managed to throw the top, catch it on the string, go to the trapeze, throw it back up and catch it in my hand.  No real regeneration, yet, but I'm pleased with today's progress.

Now that I've started, I don't know why I waited so long.... ;D

That's great to hear. Start with one like you are doing, then try two. Slowly work your way up. I have been helping my friend learn and this last week he actually started to regenerate. Keep at it and you will get it.

Thanks!  I know I'll get it, if I practice enough.  Then maybe I can start learning some of those cool regeneration tricks I've seen on video....

Good luck. Stay encouraged. don't be afraid to put it down for a day or so. Then come back with new hope!

The distinctions between the tricks were a blur to me until I began learning them. IMHO Sewing machine is the easiest to learn.  Sewing Machine and RC are so very similar as to be easily confused. The most stylish RCs have the top completely upright when catching and for most of the trick. (Lots of side to side motion at the bottom helps this happen.)
Sewing machine is with the top horizontal or nearly so.  Dale Oliver taught me not to think of catching the top but rather simply, "Lay the string over the top."  JohnM taught me much of the regen is the trip down the string. Therefore don't rush the drop.

Progress report:

After more practice this afternoon, I continue to see improvement.  This time I have been able to throw the top a second time, catch it on the string again, and then drop it.

I can't help but feel like I'm on the way to actually getting this.  Please forgive my going on about it, but it just feels so good.... ;D

Count me as a witness...It's looking better every week, Mailman!

Huh.  I wonder what happened to the ITSA patch in my signature.  It was here in last week's post at the top of the page, but is missing from today's post....

It only shows up the first time you post on a page.

Really?  I never noticed that before.  Thanks!
