Thinking about a BK cap mod to fill in the crack...
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:10:09 PM »

I'm just wondering if the air friction of the string gap in the cap of BK's / RC's causes the decay of spin to be so much worse that other tops (see http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php?topic=153.msg875#msg875).

So, my first idea was to trim some electrical tape down to wrap around the crown, and fill the string gap with flowable silicone.  I'm thinking epoxy would pop out.  I'm gonna try flowable silicone later today, but I was just wondering if any body else had any ideas?

i ground down the top of a rip-cord, mostly to try to lower the c-g and because in my clumsiness, i had a tendency to catch the string on it when trying to do a string wrap.
i don't know if it improves the spin time, but it feels much more comfortable. it is cut down to leave only a little of the groove, and then rounded down on the sides.

It is quite possible that the "Magic Winding Groove" is a significant addition of air drag. Now, the Bearing King is already a somewhat tall top that tends to lean easily, so I don't know if I would want to put that much extra weight on the crown. Yocephus solution is very interesting because it takes care of both things (but drastic I would say).

yeah, I like the grinding idea.  I did the silicone thing, and it sounds different, but I don't have the patience at the moment to get definitive comparison data.

yocephus - did ya do that on a bench grinder, belt grinder, photoshop grinder?

gee whiz, i may be a hack, but i don't photoshop everything!
abuse like this i could get in the yo-yo forums.
anyways, yes, i used a bench grinder, some files, and finally some sand paper.
oh i know what you're thinking, and yes, i still have a job. it's just that the shop is not exactly hopping
right now, what with the miserable weather and all, so i do have a ridiculous amount of spare time
to spend on such endeavors.

I bet it plays better. The BK always seemed to me to have the center of mass to high.
Nice work!
