MtnTops First turning
« on: January 03, 2010, 07:30:49 PM »

My Christmas wish( for a lathe) and my new years resolution(to turn some tops)  have collided , I am happy to say that I am proud owner of a freshly turned 3.25 wide by 3.5 high 116 gram   glued plywood with a fixed brass spintastics tip new baby top, It plays great, nice for regens . All of the recent input on the board has been great all of the Questions and all of the expert answers have been most helpfull. And I really mean it I have been going over old posts and sorting it all out, my first project spins great Thanks again to all inquisitive and expert I will send pictures soon.

Congrats on both the new lathe and your new top.  Now the competition begins between how much time you spend spinning tops and turning tops--it's a good contest and you are always a winner! ;D

eh eh eh !! good job !

she looks handsome

are you sure of your measurements ?
because 3.25 wide , it's really wide ! and the top looks of normal proportions ... may it's a little higher than 3.5 , no ?

Very Nice!
Plywood does make well balanced tops. You will find some voids in the wood occasionally. They will throw off the balance. If you make the tops hollow, you can add weight inside to improve the balance. Select high quality plywood for well balanced tops.

A good looking top.  I have made all my tops --height=width.  4" high --4" diameter + the point.  Therefore they do come out higher then wide.  This is true of all sizes.  Just a note that may help you.  Keep spinning. 8)
