Magnifique!

I was expecting it to come down as a ball of fire  >:D but, fortunately, it didn't.

Happy new year!

Well done Jim!  That looks fantastic.   8)   What a great flight!
Like Jorge, I was expecting it to burst into flames.

Very neat!!!  I am glad it did not take right off at the beginning so we could see how it takes a bit to get rolling.  It sure did get rolling, though!  Fine work.

Happy New Year back at you.

Excellent, jim! Any idea how far it went? Will someone be finding out-of-place Christmas wrap on a nearby island summit or passenger liner?

HIGH ALL  ;)

thanx for the kind words : it teases me to develop on the subject if you're interested

tech data :

first of all , to build a hot air balloon is a cool project
especially if you can get children or friends involved,
the launch being the ultimate goal

building the balloon

I have not checked the net on this topic because i have been taught
 by brazilians years ago

the shape is made of two identical cones
to get the shape the easiest is to assemble triangles
the tricky part here is to plan the order of gluing

at the bottom , you add a circular metal wire to hold the fuse

making the fuse

melt 5 kitchen candles
cut off a piece of cotton to obtain a mesh
damp the cotton in the melted candle (parafine)
compress it so as to make a brick..dry the brick between wood dowels
so as to get a parallepipede, a small brick
at the last moment of dry insert a metal wire with 4 bits
which will be attached to the bottom of the balloon

this type of fuse can last up to 5mn even with the air flow

the launch

ideal conditions are:;
no wind or mild wind + low to medium low temperature
what is important is the gradient, i mean the difference of temperature
between inside and outside the balloon

watch out for electric poles , antennas , trees near the launching zone
do not try in the summer because risk of fire (very true in corsica)

it can be fun at night, but you can only follow the light
during day time, if it's too hot the taking off will take more time
and the risk of seeing the balloon in flames before launch is high
the best times are dawn/evening or early morning

you can buy ready made balloons at a cheap price,
the paper is fire proof, the fuse is meagre and toxic, the shape is uneven, but it's
fun and instant gratification

that's it for now
questions welcome if you dare to make one ;-) spinning ??
