2017 Total Eclipse : spintop meeting?

August 21 of next year (a couple of weeks after worlds) there will be a total solar eclipse over the US going from Oregon to Georgia. Here is the Google map of the path of totality:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html
This hadn't happened in a long time over the US and it is something that cannot be missed. Hotels close to the path are already being sold out or jacking up their prices many times. There must be some top players living close to the path. For example, I see that Jefferson City is inside, close to the center line (2 minutes, 30 seconds of totality).
;)

By the way, seven years later (April 8th, 2024) there will be another one going from Mexico to Canada, where both my house and The Earl's house will be inside the totality path.

Here in Lincoln Ne:
Duration: 1m13sec
Magnitude: 1.002
Obscuration: 100.00%

Total eclipse starts a little after 6 pm. Should be a great event.

Great!  ;)

I believe that time is UT. The eclipse in Lincoln should be at 1 PM CDT, if I am not mistaken.

It looks as if the one in 2024 will be perfect where I live!

2024?  I will be happy to celebrate that one if I am still alive!!!

Jack: the 2024 goes just outside Toronto. Unfortunately, you would need a boat to get into Lake Ontario! The closest by land would be Burlington/Hamilton.

This is a good video for planning purposes:

I am going to start looking for hotels between Lincoln and Jefferson City  ;)
It is a 14 hours drive from here, not that bad.

I made a (refundable) reservation at a budget hotel in York, Nebraska (west of Lincoln). One reason I chose it, is because it is at the intersection of Hwy 80 and Hwy 83 (we plan to drive: it's 13.5 hours from here). Totality lasts 2 min 19 sec if we do not move, although I expect to drive a few miles for the extra 15 seconds. Of course, if the weather forecast is not good, we will be hitting Hwy 80 and driving as far as needed. The chances of clear or close to clear skies is about 70% for late August.

There are still plenty of hotels in the region with non jacked up prices. This will likely change.

Hopefully, clear but dark skies ahead!  8)

ooooh!  had not seen this thread until now. As ta0 mentioned my home town is Jefferson City, Missouri is within the shadow and close to the center.  I have a descent sized basement and with sleeping bags we could fit quite a few folks in there. Not much sight-seeing in JC but that means more time for top spinning. Not sure how my wife would feel about it yet...

Well, well . . .  I am moving this, at least temporarily, to the spintop boards   :)
Topclipse 2017 anybody?  >:D

At this time my plan is to have a family trip, so I would be staying at a hotel, but if the eclipse can be combined with a spintop meeting, that would be great (for me, not my wife  . . .).  Jefferson City, MO, is actually half an hour closer from me than York, NE. I just checked and there are still good hotel options in town (although some hotels are already sold out). My only concern would be the traffic if we need to escape from the clouds as Kansas City is to the west and St. Louis to the east. Eclipsophile.com gives Jefferson City a 65% of possible sunshine, which is not too bad but a little worse than York.

I moved this back to NSTR as nobody has mentioned interest in a Topclipse meeting.  But I can change it again  ;)

hi all
I met a friend of a friend last night: he works on documentaries and editing various clips etc..he is booked to spend 6 weeks in the usa, with a crew in a van ,
and they plan to film and record along the way (before and after the event maybe collecting memorabilia and testimonies..etc.)
he was explaining that it will be 100km (over50miles) in width all along the duration
with a 100% obscurity
