Found a rather impressive online article surveying spinning tops through time and across cultures at http://hubpages.com/games-hobbies/spinning-tops. Is the author someone we know?
Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time ... and with spinning tops, we decorate both.
—after Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960-1988

Everything in the world is strange and marvelous to well-open eyes.
—Jose Ortega y Gasset, 1883-1955

Well . . . My guess is that the author just found a subject that was not already covered on HubPages and researched it to fill the void. From the about page: "Hubbers . . . earn all sorts of rewards, from accolades to ad revenue."
Reading the article I don't get the feel that he/she is really into tops as the coverage is uneven. I bet much of the material was researched only to write the article. I had to smile at the caption of the Sasebo Koma: "A Mexican trompo top found in Sasebo, Japan" or the "Two traditional German kreisel" (I think they are from Armin Kolb) and the explanation that the camshaft design "are rings around the body that stabilize and balance the top". It seems that the Czech Republic has some of the most unique and cute traditional tops.  :D

If you are new to the subject, it is not a bad read.

One of the references (link) on the article (mostly blogs and wikipedia) has this nice image of playing in the Philippines:

With the nail tips the little boy does well covering his eyes!  >:D
