Making of a big Delrin top (about 5")
« on: September 26, 2016, 01:38:18 PM »

Hey guys.

Some people were asking me at nationals about the process of making my tops. I decided to put together a quick video that shows the whole entire process in time-lapse.

Check out the video on YouTube link below.

Nice work and video.  That's a pretty expensive piece of Delrin, unless your sources are cheaper than mine.

Do you have any special reasons for choosing Delrin?  It's heavy, SG=1.56.  Yes, it turns nicely, but so does polyethylene, SG~1.  Polyethylene is also cheaper.

Hey Alan. Yes, Delrin is expensive!

A friend of mine was able to get me a few large pieces at no charge......VERY nice to have no money into something I am just learning how to do.

I have never worked with polyethylene.......what are its characteristics for turning? (odor, mess/melting, etc?) How much savings is it compared to other plastics used in turning?

Great looking top - Great Video. Can you give us the specs? Like diamenter - length - wall thickness and weight. Maybe a close up of the tools and what kind of polish did you use. I have a 4 x 6 inch piece of delrin and your video makes me want to cut it. But I hate WHITE. I dye my white delrins and spray them with clear coat. Not bad.

Here are the specs on the top I made in the video. (keep in mind I was not trying to match a set of specs or design.....it just turned out this way!)
NOTE: I think I like my 3 1/2" top I made last month better, so using your 4" stock will be great!

333 grams
4 1/2" diameter
4 1/2" tall. (without the tip) Tip is almost 1"
The opening at the crown is just over 2"
Wall thickness is ~.15" except at the crown where I could not get the right angle, and down at the bottom where the screw attaches to the tip.

As far as tools go, that is my biggest weakness. Being a completely untrained wood turner, and buying most of my stuff from Craigslist, I never know what tool is supposed to be used.
I find myself using a wide skew chisel most of the time for the outside. (which keeps the sides of the top mostly straight) I use a scraper for the inside most of the time.

The polishing compound is just what I had in my shop.....I think it is called tripoli compound. I have used it for metal polishing and figured it might work OK on plastics too. (although there might be something better available.)

Thanks

Now I know why they call you Mr. Dazzlingdave. I have been cutting materials my whole life and your inside cutting on delrin amazes me. Getting inside with a hand tool with those chips scares me. So the top is 11.74 oz. and 5/32 wall thickness - that is fantastic.

Thanks Cecil.
Maybe it should scare me too? Again, I know a lot about tools and woodworking, but wood lathes, using hand tools are mostly new to me.
