usable button for energia/YYF
« on: August 19, 2016, 07:24:43 PM »

So I took my $6 top to the machine shop.  After some lathe time, the button is now 1.30" in diameter and 0.068" thick (Down from 1.50" x 0.100")
It's about 60% of the original weight.
It still snaps on and off well.  Now the button is usable for some tricks. It is still to heavy for regen tricks.
Monday it will take a trip back to the shop to make it a bit lighter still.  If I were paying for the shop time I would have a $50 button :)

Not much to see.  It's round & white, just like the original. :)

I have been doing this too Kirk.  That material, whatever it is, is incredibly easy to turn with regular wood tools. I shall make video!  I have similar results; 2.2 grams down to 1.5 grams. At 1.5 grams I find the weight tolerable.

The Elec-Trick is incredibly easy to remove the string bucket from, if you have a lathe and an exacto knife.  The Short Circuit is tricky, but Patrick Condon has posted his Short Circuit mod over at the YYE forum, it's really nice!

incidentally, it seems the strings that come with the YYF tops are intended for use with the rings because they are a little short for regular winding / throwing.  These rings stay put better than others and I am really liking them for teaching new players. Forgoing the crown wrapping lecture gets us spinning faster.  Anyway, the problem becomes; you cant' put your string in the string bucket with the ring on.  Well, this is the solution I think.  This button has been shaved down as you can see.

The new YYF spin top buttons sold separately look different. Hard to tell but do they appear to be spherical?

Steve was not involved in heavy top buttons.  That would probably be Hans AKA YoHans at YYF. He is not too very tall.

We need to get hold of those yo-yoers buying the short circuit for the counter weight and throwing away the top . . .  ::)

So YYF is getting sneaky with their labeling and coming out with these yo-yo 5A counter weights eh.?..
