From Worlds 2016 in Cleveland
« on: August 02, 2016, 07:55:47 PM »

Here we are with Cuper waiting for The Earl to arrive.  Cuper has two good stories about his trip.
At US customs he had to give an impromptu demo. The officer ended up calling others and even those being interviewed started to watch and he got applause at the end!
At the Houston Greyhound station they wanted to charge him for missing his bus. Another demo got him the fine waved!  ;D

The hotel is very nice and seems to have several areas very top friendly  >:D

When is the spintop family from Alabama arriving?

Well, it is just after midnight so that makes this officially Wednesday the 3rd of August.  Everything seems to be lining up to make this one heck of an event.  The downtown was humming when I arrived as the Indians were in town.  Their lights can be seen for a long way and their scoreboard is amazingly large.  I pulled in to the Renaissance and picked up ta0 and Cuper for a spin around believeland.  It looks pretty cool after dark and so much has changed (in a positive way) since I was last here.  There are a number of good eating spots around the hotel (including Subway and Chipotle) so that will be handy.  The hotel is pretty cool and historic and is in great shape.  Cuper and I went exploring (ta0 looked whipped) and found a fun fountain to play in plus a piano.  I sat down to play a few bars and guess who showed up?  The Hickersons!!!  Everybody was hungry so we set out to get something to eat but first we stopped at the grand ballroom where our event will be held.  Wow!  Is it nice with a balcony around the whole thing.  There is so much room!  I also noticed the room for the Maker Space but it was locked.  Every food place was closed except for a 24 hour eatery called Jake's.  They were nice to us there (and reasonably priced) so we will probably be visiting again.  We came back to see large crowds of yoyoers in front of the hotel and in a meeting room just inside the door.  We saw Mike Durdeck and even Miki!!!  It is time for some rest before our big Wednesday.  Talk to everyone later.

Oh, by the way, there is a casino just a few steps away and guess what the name of it is?  Jack's!!!

Spin tops bringing joy and fixing problems. It's almost a dream.

Would you mind if I shared this story in quotes on another forum?

We made it through the night and the morning.  Now we have a room on the "haunted" fourth floor and are spinning our hearts out.  Miki is giving chongkakegoma tips.  The Olivers are giving peg top tips to Ko from Japan.  Cuper is trying Ko's koma and killing it.  ta0 is roaming the room with encouraging words and teasing others with his Figaro at the door.  Taka was here for a while but had to attend to other duties.  Mark Hayward was also spotted on the main floor but he Is swamped with work.

We walked around the block next to the Renaissance looking for breakfast this morning but only saw a Subway open.  We sure saw plenty of other open things.....like open palms.  Cuper made a comment to me about all the begging.  After breakfast we wandered around a bit and discovered that the hotel is connected to a big indoor mall with a food court.  Suddenly our food options have grown.

I talked to Anne's dad.  He has his big tops but not his daughter!  Sorry Jack.

I am also sorry about their piano policy.  It was open last night and I had a good time tinkling the ivories.  Today it is locked and they say only people they pay are allowed to unlock it and play.  I told them I would gladly accept payment for my playing.

Mark Hayward is too swamped.  He is pulling out of freestyles.

The Maker Room is not open yet.  I am trying to wait patiently but I am kind of excited about it.

This report comes to you from Chipotle, home of the famous chicken salad with black beans, sour cream, cheese and guacamole.  Ymmm!!!

Sounds like Kirk and Rachel are 20 minutes away.

Most of the yoyoers are gone tonight for a gathering at the restaurant called the Punch Bowl Social.  This is the welcoming party.  So, the main hall is pretty empty and the spin top players are taking advantage of it.  I am winding down pretty quickly but I am trying to stay awake to see K&R.

The big news of this post are the dates for the 2017 Yo-Yo contest in Reykjavik, Iceland.  August 10-12 is the time frame and it looks like there is more information at www.ICELAND2017.com

I am sorry I am not posting more but I'd rather play. Everytime I start something comes up.

Ko is the nickname of the third Japanese player. He will be freestyling with small koma, like Keita did last year. Miki studied my freestyle and he said this time he won't play safe but do more dificult tricks.  By the way, the frestyling order will change.

We had a 2 hour workshop today and we taught a few new players including a Korean couple (they only knew whip tops). I was surprised Miki did not know Kongzhu and was flipped when he tried Mike's whistling Kongzhu.

Mike brought his Legos down and made some tops.

Taka had a very unusual top. Dazzling Dave brought his new creations.
