World Record Baby!
« on: July 19, 2015, 02:53:54 PM »

I'm a world record holder!!!

Hey all, I just got my certificate for my top-spinning world record, and I know you all want details.

Mike Hout gave me the idea to go for this record, and he even supplied the tops. It was done with finger tops. Guinness has some guidelines, like they have to be commercially available and have to be spun in a tray without missing, etc. We all know that this is not a tough record for us to break. I won't mind if anyone decides to break it, but I have two favors to ask:

1) Please wait a bit and let me savor my glory.
2) If you do try to break the record officially, make sure you don't destroy it. It's way more fun if we can go back and forth and have an international fight over the record, each breaking it by one or two tops, than if some smart-ass spins 5000 tops, and no one can ever hope to break it again. It's valuable to me as an entertainer to be able to break records in my show, so please, don't kill the fun. I'll label you a Fun Hater. Don't think I won't.

Congratulations!!!  :)

That is fantastic!
I hope you break it many more times in the future! Don't worry about me: I am not planning to go for it (at least officially).

I am curious: do they have to be spun by hand or can they be spun with a string? Would self-winding tops be acceptable?

So we have at least three Guinness World Record holders on this forum: The Earl, Dazzling Dave, and yourself. We rock!

PS: I very much like the spintop trophy behind you  ;)

EDIT: I just saw the date (17th March 2012): you really kept quiet about it . . .

Congratulations, Mark.  That is pretty exciting.  I am honored to have been a small part of it.  Thanks for the shout out!!!

So, this is a record that was set in New York City?  Was that during one of your shows?

If you have the ability to further break the record it seems like that could generate some nice pr for you and for top spinning.  That sounds wonderful to me.

Congrats again.  So happy to see your happy face in that picture.

Yes, this was set during a Stunt Lab show at The Canal Park Playhouse in New York City.

It was clear from the language of the requirements that this was a record for finger tops. They have to be commercially available.

So cool to break the record live on stage!
Those little tops are great. The little kids at church love to do battles in a frisbee with them. They call them blayblades :)  I love the fact that you can spin them on top or bottom. (which is which?)  I only have 3 of them so your record is safe.  Wait! Mike gave me some too. I need to go count them. :)

I just did a search for spinning tops on the Guinness Records website: www.guinnessworldrecords.com

The first hit is Mark's record.
The only comment so far is from a woman in Israel who asks: "Did anyone broke this record lately ? I need to know, please ...."
Looks like future competition to me!

Interestingly, there is a record category for Most Spinning Tops Spun With a String Simultaneously but there is no listing of a record or record holder. This is the first time I see something like this. I suspect that somebody has already applied for it or has an attempt planned.  :-\ I guess Mark and Mike are prime suspects  ;)

I did not find the one for the largest spinning top (by Kawasaki Steel in the 80s), which Joe is trying to break.

Other current records:

The most people spinning tops simultaneously was 377.

The most people playing whipping tops simultaneously is 507.

Spinning top - duration: 7 hr 1 min 14 sec.

The fastest mile spinning a whip top is 25 min 13 sec.

The longest running mechanical spinning top duration is 24 hr 35 min 15 sec.

The most dreidles spinning simultaneously for at least 10 seconds is 734.

Fantastic Mark. Thats what I'm trying to do with my wire walkers. I still don't know what the world record is. I'm at 121 feet, and I've herd of 175 feet.
