USA Today newspaper gives press to the tops world

Yes, it is true.  For today (and Saturday & Sunday since it is the weekend edition) the USA Today newspaper has decided to give some recognition to our whirling items.  In the Quickcross puzzle for 7/17 one of the clues is "spinning toys".

Quickcross is a a puzzle with eight clues.  Each answer is four letters long and when the puzzle is completed it is a four by four square.  Here are the other clues that complete the puzzle:

ACROSS
"Be...
...careful!"
Armed forces branch
Spinning toys

DOWN
Not this
Aviation prefix
Matt of the MLB
Ice cream brand

I love word puzzles, but I've never seen this kind before.  This one has me stumped, I'm afraid.  I don't quite know what to do with the first two clues across, and I have no knowledge of the MLB....

I found this old thread that I never answered.  Sorry to all and especially to mailman.  The Be…. and ….Careful clue is referring to TAKE HEED.  Matt in the baseball majors is Matt KEMP.

This last one was relatively easy even though I had no idea of the name of Sport Analyst. Our friend plus the first down were very useful.

The previous one I wouldn't have got without your clues.
