Ringling Brothers Circus 1950's performer
« on: July 16, 2015, 08:06:57 PM »

Here is a really great vintage photo (30's, 40's, 50's ?  ??? ) of a guy doing a high trapeze or perhaps even regenerating.

It is from a photo postcard currently on Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/331605909972
It is signed on the back as Nelson Sánchez Ruiz. I am guessing he is the one on the photo and this is an autographed performer card.

The top is not a Duncan so he was not (at least when the photo was taken) a Duncan demonstrator. I would like to know more about him.

Great find. This man has class. Not like today. All you have is Superman, and Peke-A-Chew.

I asked Mr. Google in various ways, and he answered  ;)

Mr. Nelson Sánchez Ruiz was performing in 1951 for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He had been discovered by them the previous year in Havana, so we have to assume that he was Cuban and he was already performing before that date. This information comes from Billboard magazine:

A list of attractions of the Side Show from this circus history:

Gilbert Reichert, Giant
Betty Broadbent, Tattooed Lady
Nelson Sanchez Ruiz, Top Spinner
Fred Harris, Magic
Charles Barent, Seal Boy
Josephine Helbing, Snake Trainer
Irene Parry, Fat Lady
Singalee, Fireproof Man
Patricia Zerm, Sword Swallower
Charles Horrell, Escape Artist
Fred Harris, Punch and Judy
Freda Pnshnik, Armless and Legless Girl

Great photo on a personal blog showing him performing at the entrance of the circus side show :

You can see more of the Side Show where he was performing on other photos on that blog, including his logo:

The top spinner information is interesting. The article states he was a substitute  for a slack line performer. I wonder if the tops were enough of a draw to keep Mr. Ruiz employed on a more permanent basis.

Secondly - Mermouy has skills. That's a really good video.

High toss in a tux.  Complete with handkerchief.  A great photo.
