hi all

for next year i'm preparing a corpus of documents on the western times in North America

so i have two questions which could be useful for this project and a gain of time , compared to the vast scope of information available on the net

1 what are your two favourite cowboys' songs ?
i'm talking "cowboy" not just country and western

i have already selected 3 tunes for study
Raw Hide
The ballad of Jesse James
North to Alaska

2 what is your favourite western movie / or  scene in a western movie

thanx for your inputs

jim

Oh let me think for a while on this.
I will say that I have always loved the cowboy stories of Bret Harte and recently found a book of his in a second hand store.  O. Henry also had some good cowboy stories mixed in with his other works.

My suggestion, all the way from the home of the Alamo  ;) , Pecos Bill:

A version of this, translated to Spanish, was a favorite of mine as a kid.

As for cowboy songs, my favorite is "Riding Down the Canyon".  Perhaps I would choose "I'm Going to Leave Old Texas" as my next choice.

As for western movies, most any western starring John Wayne would fit the bill....

the Earl of Whirl

Impressive choice, ta0.  I like the cyclone in the cartoon.  I know you do, too!!!

Home Home on the Range is known by many.  Happy Trails sticks in my mind from Roy Rogers.  I Got Spurs that Jingle Jangle Jingle always made me smile.  But I would say my two favorite ones are Red River Valley and Buffalo Gals Won't You Come Out Tonight!!!

I put "western movies" and "cowboy movies" in Google and found that I have good memories of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid along with Blazing Saddles.  I think, though, the movie that touched me the most was the 1960 movie "The Alamo" with John Wayne

I enjoy most of Willies Nelson's & Waylon Jennings' Music.

This song & slideshow seem to resonate with your focus of study:

I've liked this ever since I was a kid:

Even if only a sarcastic rendition of the old west zeitgeist...I love Blazing Saddles the best! ;)

If you haven't yet watched (binged!) the HBO series "Deadwood", I'm sure you'll find it entertaining if not outright educational.  The story of the Dakota territory had not previously been part of my ignorant concept of the American west--it is now.  I especially love the way this series captures the grimy, dingy, filthiness that so sharply contrasts present standards of hyper-sanitation.  Warning, the language is equally foul.
