When a boom ends
« on: November 14, 2009, 09:13:48 PM »

This Duncan whistler on the card now on Ebay is a note of caution about overstocking. The $1 on the card was crossed and 50 cts was written on it. But it seems that was not enough to sell. The edge of the card says 10 cts! There is another auction for the original Imperial on the card where the $1 price was also crossed over and 10 cts was written. But even with those huge discounts these tops remained in their cards and have not seen a player yet . . .

By the way, a couple of weeks ago a Gates top not well listed went for only $15! (+$6 shipping). However, the tip was "worn but playable."

Whitout promotions the sales falls down quickly. I see that phenomenon at the end of each Trompos Cometa season.

Sometimes is difficult to do searchs in ebay by keywords.

That poor unappreciated Whistler lives with me now.  It's found a loving home.  ;)

I am happy for the Whistler and you  :D

Do you know how much you paid adjusted to 1964 dollars? I am sure more than $1 (unless you count the lost interest, of course  ::)).

Good to see tops still in the wrap.  Make great display in top cases.

what about when a boom starts? better not to have a real boom with a toy, history shows it is usually impossible to know how predict sales enough to profitfrom it before your toys are selling for pennies on the dollar.
but that does make me wonder, how does the interest vary so much in such a standard toy as a top?  is it the promotion or theavailability? i don't see many threads in yoyo forums about buying a lathe or making your own bearing systems.
right now if you are interested in throwing yoyos there are lots of amazing choices, some from the big guys, and some from much smallermanufacturers, and the people that throw know all about how and where to get them. it surprises me that the yoyo manufacturers and
suppliers are not interested in growing an interest in tops because it seems like it should be an easy sale (compared to the $100+ yoyos they routinely sell).

Yes, when there is a boom (fad/bubble) it can become very risky because nobody can predict the end with certainty. For example, Dale Oliver predicted the 98 boom was going to last a few more months and got stuck with a stock of yo-yos that he only sold over many years. By the way, I talked to Dale yesterday and he said he is selling more tops than yo-yos!

Dale,
I don't find your tops on the net.  Where are they?
