No tops from grocery bags.  The place I shop had removed the return bag barrels for two occasions in a row (I hate shopping and go once every 4-6 week) when I had tried to get rid of my bag collection so I thought why not make a blob for turning a top.  The reason to not make a blob from bags with my technique is that the quality of the blob is crap (just like the color ;D)

Are you near Owen Sound?  We have a regular visitation going on with that city, mostly through our American Legion group.  One year, a bus load of Miamisburgers goes up there.  Next year, a bus load of Owen Sounders comes down here.  This has been going on for forty years or so.  One year a bunch of Owen Sound people came to a worship service at our church.  I talked about them in the sermon and they laughed real hard when I talked about loonies and twoonies.  In the offering plate that Sunday were dozens of those coins!!!

I always dreamed of joining them on one of the trips to Owen Sound and taking some tops.  Are you anywhere near there?

Ha!  As an interesting side note.....in the USA Today paper it is reported that California Governor Jerry Brown signed the nation's first  statewide ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery and convenient stores.  So, no plastic brown chunks resembling poop will be coming from the physics departments of UCLA, USC or Stanford (at least not from plastic bags).

not terribly far but not exactly close, alot of people here in toronto have cottages around there actually, abit far for me personally though unfortunately. lol ya know thats the first time i ever realized its spelled like a 2, i remember when those things came out it was quite a big deal eh eeeeverybody in school wanted a toonie lol  ;D . they tried that bag ban business here in toronto, they made it illegal for a store to give or sell you a plastic grocery bag but unfortunately for whoever thought of that insane idea the grocery stores didnt obey the law and kept giving them out, even the mayor said it was retarded frankly it was, whoever let that into law should be removed from there position its that impractical of an idea good grief, anyway they over turned the ruling and now alls well and legal

I just realized that I never mentioned how grateful I am to our fantastic host, John Marcus. It was so much fun to poke around the Physics department in Cincinnati and see all of the cool stuff they were working on. I never knew how excited I would be about a giant gas bag, but it was really cool. The whole day in Miamisburg and Cincinnati was fantastic. You should all take the pilgrimage someday if you can.

Concerned that I had written off grocery bags too quickly and with the rotomolder operating, I decided to mold a top from grocery bags.  I counted out 60 bags to be in the range of 300 grams of raw materials and thought they should cut up pretty easily since they are so thin and tear readily when slightly loaded with food products. :P  Wrong!  Grocery bags do not cut easily, at least with scissors (yes, sharp scissors).  The bags are so thin that instead of cutting, the material just sort of folds over.  Being stubborn (and stupid) I spent over 3 hours cutting up bags and fighting static electricity shuffling the bits around and then loading the mold by hand since the funnel clogged instantly.

Enjoy the results.

That is shockingly ugly, and quite evil-looking. I like it.

Grocery bags!  Yuck!!!

johm, I admire your persistence.

In the world of top spinning, it appears that grocery bags are only good for carrying tops.  In the world of jugglling, they make wonderful scarves to juggle.  But in the world of the Top Spinning Hall of Fame, grocery bags in a melted clump make a great display item!!!

I might make a good FIRE top  >:D
OOOH OOO! The porous plastic might melt with an alcohol or lighter fluid flame BUT I wonder if a top of or with Oilite Bronze (porous sintered bronze) could be made. I would guess that with the lube oil dissolved out that it would soak up fuel but (hopefully) not spew the flame as much as a regular wick due to the small pores.
Time to start testing!

that's insane !!

now,at least, we know ...

thanx for being so stubborn even after the scissors slipping...
