POLL ADDED: Name the spintop association!
« Reply #16 on: November 13, 2014, 06:23:21 PM »

Turbo could be an acronym: Tops(pinning) Universal Recreational and Battling Organization
A little acknowledgement for Gould's book.

I am adding a poll. There will be a second round between the 2 that get the most votes.
You can vote for up to two names. Changing votes is allowed as long as the poll is open. I will close it when it seems we won't get any more votes.

I have a long history with ITSA.  I like how it slips off the tongue and I even have an ITSA t-shirt.  Yet, when one puts ITSA in Google so many other things come up like: Intelligent Transportation Society of America, Information Technology Student Association; International Thermal Spray Association, Information Technology Staff Augmentation and even the ITSA film festival in Sonora, California!

There are other TOPS organizations but it looks like there might not be as many conflicts.  I did not look up all the other acronyms but this might be something to consider.

In top lingo, is there a specific difference between the term
"Spintop" and "Spinning Top"?
Just curious.

I have used spintop mostly for our trick tops while spinning top as a more generic term. I think that has also been the usage by others. I have the impression the yo-yo companies started using the term in the second half of last century, although I could be wrong. Before that if you wanted to abbreviate spinning top you just said top.  But I wouldn't be surprised if the terms become synonymous as time passes (if they aren't already). In fact, for the association name I assumed that Spinning Top, Spintop and Top were all the same.

hi all
new approach:

replacing "spinning tops" with "skill toys"

that way we would be linked to the toy industry ...
toy fairs , toy museum etc

it could be useful for our future projects

International Skill Toys Association
or

International Tops and Skill Toys Association

I disagree. That would be like trying to claim to represent yo-yos, kendamas, etc. which have their own associations. Maybe one day we can enter into a federation of skill toys with them, but just trying to group together the multitude of diverse spinning top cultures of the world is ambitious enough, in my opinion.

To be fair I think that you need to have one more item in your poll for the name:

ABSTAIN
or
NONE OF THE ABOVE

I am just not connecting with any of these so far.

Dick:

I added the "'None of the Above" as per your suggestion. I did not think that any of those were perfect either, but the problem is that nobody was proposing other names, or I would have them up there. I would hope that those who select None of the Above propose another name.

Perhaps something simple? Like World Spinning Top Federation (WSTF) or International Spinning Top Association (ISTA) ?
Spinning Tops Society (STS)?

Changed what the A stands for in IASTA to Academy: International Academy of Spinning Top Arts.
Now we can give little statues as awards, the Oscars Jims.  :)

i agree, there are plenty of skill toys out there but its our duty to represent the one we love i.e tops. and god forbid we start attracting the....kendama crowd! bunch of hippies!  :o ( just a joke  ;D ). so ya tops are for us, skill toys are for other associations forgive me jim  :'(

US Top Spinning Federation
French Top Sinning Federaion
Spain Top Spinning Federation
etc.

World Top Spinning Federation
