(Note: I split this from the Koma why so cool thread)

These tops are called Zuguri Koma. I found an announcement for the 27th (!) national ("all-Japan") contest next February in the town of Tsugaru, in the north of the main island: link. From the photos there it must be the same place where those videos where filmed.

I need to get a Zurugi snow top for my collection, although I won't be able to properly test it in San Antonio  :P

Whoa, thank you so much for that info.

I had been hunting for one of these for so long until last year. I only knew it was a snow top.

I visited the Spinning Top Museum in Nagoya, Japan and bought 3 of these. Not as nice or large as the one in those videos though.

I'm bummed I didn't buy more.

Check out mine :)

Welcome to the forum! I look forward to the photos of your collection.

I also got a zuguri or jiguri koma when I visited the Nagoya museum in 2015. I got one with a double cup:

But it has not snowed in San Antonio  :P

hble: Welcome! Looking forward to your photos.

ta0: If you'd like to try your top in some fine Colorado powder this winter, you're welcome to stay with us. But you'll have to teach me to throw.   :D

[Moderator: moved to this thread]

This is a fun video of an "ice tops" competition.
Seems to be a length of spin contest and very large tip radius of curvature seems the norm.

Trying to post a live link to this:
