Weird shaped tops balanced using software
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:49:20 PM »

A group from Disney Research in Zurich developed a software to balance weird shaped spintops made with 3D printers.

They presented the paper last month at SIGGRAPH 2014. You can download it from here: www.disneyresearch.com/project/spin-it/

I had planned to one day make finger tops shaped as 3D bananas, but they have probably already beat me  :-\

These spinning objects should be at the next International Yo Yo competition on Disney Boardwalk.  This would be a lot of fun for the participants at the House of Blues.

I believe JNeff may be interested in this.  I sure saw a lot of weird shapes come out of his bags.  :D

Thanks Tao, I was thinking today about adding weight to the Koma, and I thought why not take the weight of the other side. Drill a hole and plug the top of it.

[Admin Edit: merged with all topic]

Disney, of all people, has used 3-D printing to make Sumo wrestlers spin:

Interesting development.
I love the Break Dancing Armadillo and the Sumo Ballerina!
Thanks for posting this Rick.  :)

Seems like some of this looks a little familiar.  Yet, there seems to be more detail and more spinning objects than what I remember.  Thanks for finding this "further development" in this amazing process.

[Note from moderator: merged threads]

No time to write more at the moment but I just remembered this while chatting with Emma.
And so the project at Disney and the downloadable paper about it...
Interesting isn't it? Maybe someone (I bookmarked it then forgot about) has already posted this...?

See some of you in Marines next days!
