the price of gas (shocking)
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:20:27 PM »

USA Today newspaper had some great stats in their edition today.  The question was: how many gallons of gas would $10 get you in the following countries.  This is significant for all of us traveling to top spinning events or to spin some trompo with some friends so I am sure ta0 will want to put this in the latest spin section!

$10 in Britain gets you one gallon of gas
$10 in China gets you two gallons of gas
$10 in the USA gets you three gallons of gas

now it starts to get interesting as
$10 in Saudi Arabia gets you 22 gallons of gas

and this stat will floor you as
$10 in Venezuela will get you 238 gallons of gas!!!

Wow!
Most top spinning in Venezuela is in small towns in the interior of the country, so this may be convenient one day.
The prices for eating here in Paris must be double those in Prague  :(

Wow!
How is Venezuela so cheap? Do they have a large source of gas there?
I understand Saudi because they don't really have to pay for the transportation of the gas.

I, too, am quite envious of ta0 getting to visit Paris.  I hope you had a good time and were able to connect with some of the spinners in the area.

I am still stunned that gas in Venezuela is less than 5 cents a gallon!!!

Venezuela is a member of OPEC and has significant oil reserves. The socialist government controls prices

Thanks Kirk!
I suppose that makes sense.
I would guess they don't export at the same price. ::)

With a little math, gas in Czech comes out to be about $9.00 a gallon. :(

In the US if you buy gas from a Citgo gas station you are buying Venezuelan oil. But the Venezuelan government has been trying to sell Citgo for some years.

With gas so cheap in Venezuela (I still cannot believe gas is under five cents a gallon there) they will probably not be buying many of these new cars I read about in the paper today.  For $6,800 they are selling three wheel cars that get 84 miles per gallon!  They are Elio cars and they save money by having one door, one less wheel (of course) and space for only two passengers (not side by side but one behind the other).  The company says they are not skimping on safety features.  They are supposed to come off the assembly line in 2015 and are especially designed for the commuter market which is believed to be very large (the article says 80 percent of commuter cars have only one passenger).

Hmmm.  Sounds interesting with an 8 gallon tank that can get more than 670 miles in one fill up and a top end speed of 100 miles an hour.  Acceleration isn't the greatest (as you might imagine) at 9.6 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.  Join the revolution, they say in their video.
