ARGENTINA!  ;D

Penalties are the most cruel and random way of deciding games. But Holland had already gone forward thanks to the penalties against Costa Rica (who had themselves beating Greece the same way), so it was their time to lose. Actually, Argentina had more chances to score than Holland so I think the result was fair.

Great festive atmosphere at the Argentinian viewing party! Very noisy, with the songs you usually hear at their stadiums. I wish I could have stayed longer for the after the game celebrations (today they are also celebrating independence day).

Germany - Argentina is going to be an interesting game. Also, for very different reasons, Holland - Brazil for the third place.

Note: EDITED with the results of the final.

Tomorrow either Argentina or Germany will add a new WC trophy. But the club of winners will remain the same and very small. It is really difficult to get in. I think the US because of its size and resources will eventually make it, but most countries will never win in my lifetime. The list is:

Brazil 5
Italy 4
Germany 4
Argentina 2
Uruguay 2
France 1
England 1
Spain 1
Rest 201 Fifa member countries 0

Uruguay because of its small population size will probably never win again (although in 2010 came close and had a real chance). But no other country will ever have the same number of trophies per capita.  Here is a list I made using the population values from the CIA. You can see how many cups and years (assuming they won each world cup from now on) it would take for each country to equal Uruguay (for Argentina and Germany I included tomorrow's game in the year calculation).

Country   Population M   Cups per 10M   Cups to Uruguay   Years to Uruguay
Uruguay   3.33   6.0   0   0
Italy   61.68   0.65   33   128
Germany   81   0.49   45   180
Argentina   43.2   0.46   24   96
Brazil   202.65   0.25   117   468
Spain   47.74   0.21   28   112
England   63.74   0.16   37   148
France   66.26   0.15   39   156
Netherlands   16.88   0.00   10   40
USA   318.98   0.00   191   764
China   1355.69   0.00   813   3,252

Interesting.
I knew Uruguay was small, but I did not know it has a smaller population than Atlanta, GA.  It is very remarkable that Uruguay has even made the cut of 32.

On the semi final? You lost!   :P
On the third place match I would have lost if I had seen your bet in time. Actually, it was more a wish than a belief that Brazil would win. I feel very sad for them. On the other hand it is deserved for Robben, he is a very good player (although Mexico was robben!)

You want to bet on the final? I go with Argentina, although I think Germany has a slight advantage. Well, I guess a Frenchman cannot bet in favor of Germany  ::) By the way, two British commentators on ESPN said that a final between Germany and Argentina was the worst possible for their countrymen, except possible one that involved France  ;D

Germany champion!!!!
But Argentina was so close . . .  :'(

I believe Germany deserves the title as it had more depth and a better system. But Argentinians will be kicking themselves for a long time for the goal opportunities missed. Anyway, they should be proud, they played well and could have won.

Next world championship coming in less than a month in Prague!  ;)

Dick, the 2018 World Cup is in Russia.....

It was a great final; truly a game for the ages.....Argentina really had more chances than Germany, Higuian will think about his missed chance in the first half for the rest of his life.  Gotze's goal (chest to volley to opposite corner of the net) was one the best, if not the best, of the tournament.

Neuer is clearly the best goalie in the world, and Messi getting the Golden Ball is nice, but not enough for him.  I view him as the best modern football player, but I think he feels that without a World Cup championship he hasn't done enough.  I guess we'll have to wait till 2018 to find out....

Something else historically remarkable was going on in the grandstands: the two Heads of State present, from Germany and Brazil, were women. If the president of Argentina had also been there, they would have been all three women!  :o  8)

This is a list of all the countries that have ever reached the semi-finals at a world cup (for a couple of years with a different format I used the 4 first places). I used Croatia as inheriting Yugoeslavia and Russia the USSR.

Country   Total semifinals
Germany   13
Brazil   10
Italy   8
Argentina   5
Uruguay   5
France   5
Netherlands   4
Sweden   4
Croatia   3
Spain   2
England   2
Hungary   2
Czech/Slovakia   2
Poland   2
Austria   2
Portugal   2
USA   1
Chile   1
Turkey   1
Russia   1
Belgium   1
Bulgaria   1
S. Korea   1
