What?!  :o   ???
August 1 & 2! That is one week before worlds in Prague!
It sounds to me like a rival contest!  :-\  Did Duncan have a quarrel with the organizers of the even in Prague?
I checked the world's site and right now it only lists as sponsors the Czech association and yoyonews.com. This could be bad for yo-yoers if my guess is correct (it won't affect us spintop players much).  Who has insider info?

I think that Greg Cohen from yoyo guy.com is somehow
involved / he ran the worlds for the past many years in Florida

Duncan has a deal with Disney to hold a contest (outside) at Disney on August 1st (or early august, but I think august 1).

Duncan MUST be talking about the top :-)

They have a daily update of who is competing on the web page.
They also mention "professionals" several times.

Wow!  This sure surprised me.

Kirk is traveling to Ohio and called me about getting together.  Sadly, I have a big and long track meet today so I am not available.  Maybe he can connect with johnm?  Anyway, he told me about this and I was stunned to see such a nice site with all the possibilities...........including Kendama and our spinning wonder!!!

I must admit.  It has caught my attention.  And it is at a time of the year when I could possibly attend!  I am anxious to hear more.

As I said in that thread somebody linked, this has been in the works for quite a long time.. it's part of the deal Duncan made when they set up kiosks at Downtown Disney in Orlando and Anaheim.

I'm considering the trip, but as I've said I was at worlds in 2000, and I know how absolutely horrendous that was to be outside, in August, in Orlando. It will be 100 F, with 90+% humidity, and it will rain for about 15 minutes in the early afternoon. How do I know? because it -always- is like that in august, there are no exceptions to this rule.. not even Disney can control the weather (I'm absolutely sure they've tried).

Since the pan american contest was canceled, I think I'll redirect my energy and try to attend Nationals in Chico for the first time in like 7 years.

Fun Fact: Did you know the first USA National Yo-Yo Contest was organized by Duncan Toys & held at Disneyland® Park in Anaheim, California?

that fun fact was gleeped from the Duncan yo-yo site directly.  hope i'm allowed to do that. anyways, maybe the Worlds contest in Prague is trying to undermine the Disney contest, because the Duncan event seems to have the history behind it.
Uncle Walt has deep pockets, I'm glad he's showering some money and attention on the yo-yo and spin top community. I doubt there will be a huge debate over the validity of a win in Prague because there were other players that went to Florida instead. Why should people that want to throw tops and yo-yos always be in starving artist mode? If Disney wants to get the money gun out and have a yo-yo contest, it will be like worlds on steroids as far as how many people see it and get introduced to spin tops and yo-yos.

The winner of that first national contest in 1963 was Rusty Steubing.  He won $5,000 cash what corrected for inflation is equivalent to over $38,700!!!!  (he did have to pay taxes on that)   :o :o :o :o  8) 8) 8) 8)

I believe he was 14, the maximum age to enter:

I have talked with Rusty a few times on the phone but I have not been able to meet him in person yet, although he lives in San Antonio.  He was going to come to my house so Takeshi could interview him for the Duncan history video but canceled at the last second.

This is a poster for the next contest in 1964 (just before the bankruptcy):

The second place on that one was Valery Oliver's brother, Forest Larson:

I have seen that huge trophy at Val and Dale's house.

From the main page, go to Competitors.  We're at the bottom, with no registrants.
