Gasing from Kampung
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:56:43 PM »

Here are a couple of videos on Gasing I came across today.

Some good battling as well as fabrication.
They appear to be part of “Traditional Games” coverage on Indonesian TV.

Jack, are you still making gasing?  ???

I hope you all enjoy watching them as much as I have.

Great videos Larry, thanks for posting them.

These large metal rimmed top battles are amazing.  The boy carving a gasing is kind of humbling to witness the fine top he produces with his knife.  The fabrication in the second one is also very interesting, seems like the metal ring might be a piece of pipe rather than the cast tin as we've seen for the long spin type gasing.

Very nice videos, thanks for posting them. They are from the island of Lombok in Indonesia.

I really want to get one of these large Indonesian tops (Gasing Lapet). The shape is unique and beautiful, plus they have a metal rim and nice colors.  It kind of hurts me the sound they make when they hit each other in battle  :-\  The video indicates a weight of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb.)  The wrapping they take is a hybrid between the flat coil of the Malaysian giant gasings and the most usual wrapping of conical tops.

Those are absolutely great videos Jack!

Incredible how the guy on the second one paints the top while spinning on his hand from a snap start!  :o

The first video shows very different gasings from different islands of the Indonesian archipelago (Flores, Java, Lombok) but mostly from the village of "Kuntap" in East Kalimantan in (Indonesian) Borneo.  Surprisingly, those tops can be spun either on the pointy side (what I would have called the tip) or on the crown side.  I have one somewhat similar-looking from Malaysia.  It never occurred to me to spin it on the crown. Also, I have thrown it by wrapping it our way (it does have a little nail tip that the Kuntap tops lack) but now I will try to spin it with that crown wrap.

Nice documentary, thanks John!

I wish I understood Indonesian (besides the words: gasing, traditional, national and international  ::) ). But at 5:14 it shows that it exists a rule book by H. Agus, MD, for "The Grand Gasing" that is both in Indonesian and English.  Unfortunately, I could not find it on abebooks.

At the end you can see that Indonesian gasing teams participated on the TAFISA World Sport for All Games in Lithuania in 2012 and that the next TAFISA worlds will take place in Jakarta on November 10-16 of 2016. I looked it up and TAFISA is a worldwide organization with headquarters in Germany (but with little presence in the US) that is recognized by the UN, the International Olympic Committee, etc. It may be a good partner for the future SPIN (Spintop Players InterNational) association  :)

I went a bit deeper after watching the video and did a few searches.  I believe that I found a copy of the Rule Book in PDF format.  It is really worth reviewing even though our Indonesian is not that good.  Here is the link:

Thank you Larry!  That book find is some real sleuthing, nice job.

The book (well the pictures) is very interesting.  Is he throwing around the pole on that cover shot?

The first video showing some of the fabrication process is wonderful!  I don't have a Lombok gasing yet, but I do want one badly. By the way, according to Wikipedia, the Indonesian government is pushing the Lombok island as the second tourist destination after Bali: maybe one day . . .

You had posted that video before on the thread of the wonderful Indonesian gasing poster

After watching both videos, it is clear that they throw the gasing so when it hits the ground (or another gasing) there is still some rope coiled around the crown and they do a final pull at that time.
