Poll - How long have you been spinning tops?
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:49:13 PM »

I recall a poll on the age of forum members. But I wonder how much spinning experience members have. (as opposed to life experience)

After Walter's comment I added a category. One person needs to check that his vote is still correct.

Feel free to comment on how long it took you to get good at tops. (in your own eyes)

You are to short on the long end.  I have spun tops since I was 7 although I never got serious until I was 21.  That would be either 66 or 52 years.  Either way it is a very long time. :D

From 1997 to 2001 I learned the basics; wire walker, corkscrew, etc.
2001 to 2010 nothing
2010 to 2013; regenerations, snap start, tangler, blah blah

Depends on lots of things, including what you mean by spinning tops.  My first top was a gift from my Aunt Rowene for my third birthday.  It was not a "throwing / peg" top, but was a nice metal pump top.  Lest you scoff, I remember long hours of working on that top to make it spin right.  65 years ago, pump tops did not have that plastic "foot / base" to them, and it took a lot of practice to get one to spin - metal on a wooden or linoleum floor! -  tends to slide out from under about a few hundred times before a little kid gets the action perfectly vertical!  If you are  talking peg tops, I still fall into the longest category - someone very young must have created this poll if they think 20-35 is the top limit!  I hit that easily - made and spun my first peg tops in the mid 80's and I was an adult then.  Walter learned as a kid, so he probably could honestly click on a 50-75 year button!  Bob Rule, Don Winters, Joe Mauk, the list goes on and on.  Most of you guys are just beginners!   ;)

Well I'm not sure that 54 counts as very young. That is a matter of perspective. However I have been spinning less than 2 years.  I got a plastic tippy top as a party favor at a friend's birthday party.  This brought to mind having seen pictures of tops with strings. I did not know anyone that had one and had never seen one.  Youtube and eBay to the rescue. I stared spinning at age 52.

OK guys I added 2 categories.  3 of you need to (possibly) re-vote.

Take one off over 20 and put it in the last entry.  I couldn't figure out how to do it.  I can honestly say 56 years. :P

I'm still in over 20 if you are talking about peg/throwing tops, but 65 if tops in general.

I am loving this discussion.  Good to see there are other "antique" top spinners out there. 8)
