looks fun and actually spinnable Chinese big top style and maybe by whipping.  But at $500-$600 maybe not.

Today I took Diego to visit a tech collaborative space in San Antonio (Geekdom) to see if he could get mentoring to fulfill an internship class requirement of his high-school.  We get there and the first thing I see is this:

Wow! I could not believe it!

My son was: "What are you doing? Those are not to sit down!" But I knew better  :D

My luck was complete when I realized that Diego had my laptop backpack and inside there were tops:

I did not want to embarass Diego anymore so I could not play much with the chairs . . . but I plan to go back  ;)

They have these at the City Museum of St. Louis. They are fairly unnerving to sit in at first, but quickly become entertaining.

I was at the Liberty Center Mall area last night (just north of Cincinnati) and noticed they had eight of these chairs out in the play area with a giant chess board and more.  They looked like fun as people spun around in them.  I tried one and really enjoyed it.  They did not look cheap.

Where's your selfie sitting on one, Mike?  :D

The link given by John doesn't have them anymore, but they can still be bought for $760 (discounted from $895) from the Herman Miller site.

Ahhh!!!  There is that tread.  I could not find it.  Thanks.

I was impressed that they had eight of them and people were still having a good time with them..........even at midnight!

Clearly those giant tops are not chairs!!

Did anyone tried to open the top cap to check for the rope??

Ha!  Very good!!!  I will try to open the top of the top next time I am down there.  I should also take a top and try to boomerang it.

Great way to remind people that tops are interesting and fun! I'd love to play with some of my tops from one of these chairs.

The pictures about me finding these chairs I posted here.
They had at total of six of those spintop chairs in the youth hostel in Würzburg.

I tried to use the area where you are supposed to sit as an arena for a throw top while the chair itself is spinning: It did not work very well. The curvature is to steep, the surface too rough, the hole in the center too big.
It would in principle be easy to make a better spintop of that chair by improving its tip. One would just need to place it on a ball about the size of a tennis ball - I did not have anything like that with me.
Or one could place it on top of a larger spintop then I had with me - maybe I am better equipped next time I come across one of those spintop chairs.
