just came across this old duncan patent for the string groove back in 66' thought u guys might enjoy  ;)

Thanks a lot! Great find!

I am pretty sure they started to make the tops with the "Magic Winding Groove" before the patent was issued, probably at the same time they applied for it (1964). They were used on wooden tops and after bankruptcy those were not made anymore.

Now you need to send it to Duncan, so they re-learn what they once knew and then forgot!  >:(

LOL ya that and that metal BK  :D . i was really quite astonished at the amount of patents relating to tops eh  :o i think there was like 33000 hits for "spintop" with some excelent examples of whiptops i must say, very interesting stuff  ;)

We discussed that patent before: pistol top.

This looks like the original patent for Imperial type tops (now mostly Mexican tops): Combination Container and Spin Top, US Pat. 3,269,053 by Francis V. Cunningham, Gerald C. Proctor and N. Paulina of Illinois.



It was issued on February 22, 1966, but applied for on April 24, 1963, which is about the time they came out.
