top spinning poetry
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:00:54 PM »

One interesting thread on the unicycle site that continues to get some action at times is unicycle poetry.  I thought maybe we could try a thread about top spinning poetry.  These can be poems you have heard, or you have found or ones you have written.  I know Jim will want to give this a try as soon as he recovers from his yo-yo gathering in the park.

This is the poem on a poster from Don Olney that now resides in the Top Spinning Hall of Fame....

Happy little spinning top
Round the table creeping
Spin away until you drop
Then I'll know you're sleeping

My youngest son, a lad by the name of Joe
Said come with me dad for I want to throw
That spinning and whirling thing to and fro

I went despite the fact I did not want to go
Who knew my interest in that thing would grow
And that one day I would even get to hold Figaro

Thanks czyoyo.  Please note, I did not say that I was allowed to throw Figaro.  I was only allowed to hold it!

Here is a haiku I found on the internet:

Spins with abandon,
It whirs, whirs and then slows down,
To lie quiet on its side.

Hi Mike , Hi all
here is my entry :

I once met a top named jolly-toupie,
Her waist was as round as a spinning-jenny,
I asked her for a dance,
It was like in a trance,
And I fell in love with toupie-jolie .

Thanks Jim.  I knew you would come through.

I was trying to remember the top spinning song you shared a while back.  I finally got it and thought it should be in this thread:

I'm a regular spinning top
I keep spinning I can't stop
Don't try to slow me down
I'm a spinning top

I'm spinning round and round
I was spinning when I hit the ground
Don't try to slow me down
I'm a spinning top

I'll come spinning through your town
Gonna spin your little heart round
Baby, can't slow me down
I'm a spinning top

I'm a regular spinning top
I keep spinning I can't stop
Don't try to slow me down
I'm a spinning top

I found this in Mama Lisa's World.

Poem: Spinning Top
July 15th, 2009

When I spin round without a stop
And keep my balance like the top,
I find that soon the floor will swim
Before my eyes; and then, like him,
I lie all dizzy on the floor
Until I feel like spinning more.

It is another sad night in Miamisburg on the street of Pearl
It's not like I don't have anything else around to whirl

But there was something special to me you see
In those little metal cups that I would play on one knee

We spent many a lonely hour together in spin
I never felt at a loss for every snap felt like a win

The sound of them spinning and ringing like a chime
Were more wonderful to me than even the best rhyme

Maybe someday the great mystery will be solved
And those dagnabbed ornery cusses will be absolved

But until then I will wonder which one of those radicals
Has in their possession my cute little rascals

I think that is your best poem, Mike. It's written from the heart.
I like it and feel your loss. Or perhaps it is just that I am in a similar mood,
with the Spurs just topped by the Heat.  :'(

Thanks for your kind words, ta0 and Jim.

I am sorry about the Spurs.  They played well.

I am also sorry about my spleen, if Jim can feel it all the way over in Paris!
