what is "hype" ?are spintops "hype"? what is the next "hype"?

there's this question about what is "hype" on the french yy forum
i read that it was a short form of "hypodermic needle": is that junky slang ?
it could do for the metaphoric aspect: to be hyped ???

hype = Extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion

The prefix Hypo means under. For example Hypodermic being Under Skin. Hypoallergenic makeup will not give on a skin rash, and so on.
The prefix Hyper means over. For example Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure and Hyperactivity  is abnormally active.

Neff is correct. Hype has come to mean over the top speech or writing. (as opposed to over the trompo speech)
