My grandson and I throw four inch wood tops hand made. We could not believe the way you can handle a big top. Is that top stock? Is it hallow and how much does it weigh? By the way the best string that we came up with is from Chiss Neff.

Thanks Cecil (and others)!

The top is stock. It is solid wood. (Not hollow.)
I haven't weighed it but if I had to guess, ... I'd say about 2 pounds. Others can probably tell you a closer weight.
After throwing it for hours-on-end the first and second days I had it, I thought that my arms were going to fall off! :D
Great way to build some muscles! 8)
The top came with a piece of white rope. (clothes line???) It is cotton on the outside with a nylon or poly core. Although this rope is perfect, I would like to try some other ropes for fun.

Does anybody have any rope suggestions?
Neff: what is your rope made of?
I assume cotton is the way to go. I know cotton is best for normal sized tops.

Thanks for all of your nice comments.  ;)

I can answer some of the questions.
 1.  The Watts' Top is made of basswood.  This is the wood that was used for wooden legs etc. before modern stuff was invented.  It is consistent in grain and light weight.  Turns very well and sands easily without leaving grain markings.  It is becoming hard to come up with however.  I have also made Watts' Tops out of other woods, Pine, Cherry, Oak, and Redwood to name most but I prefer basswood.
 2.  The rope I get from Walmart or any other place I can find cotton clothes line rope.  Nylon does not work.  To slippery.  Again it is hard to find good rope and it does wear out.  Whenever I go past rope and string in any store, I look it over to see if I can improve on the quality.
 3.  It does take talent to play a 5" Watts' Top and it appears that Tyler has all of that and much potential for the future.  He is a delight to watch. :D

My 5" Watts (#213) weighs 580g, or 1.2 pounds.

I make most of my string from cotton, but making the thickness needed for a 5" top, north-american style of play, is a little tricky.  It needs to be much thicker than for Colombian style which uses much longer rope.  I have found a few dense but light acrylic yarns that I can blend in for thickness, but it is hard to keep the twisting even.  I still use the sash chord Walter sent with my #213.

Will the clothes line sent with the top wash well?  ???
I know if i put a dirty normal string in the washer, it will come out almost like new.

I wash by hand in the sink with soap and warm water.  Scrub by hand, rinse well and hang up to dry.  Kids have sticky hands and I let them use my rope and top strings as well.

I had to go back and watch Tyler Young again.  I am totally amazed again.  Thanks Tyler for a great show. ;D
Hopefully some of the Newbees will take time to see what they will be doing in a few months.

I had a friend ask if I had a video of myself spinning tops.  I do not.  I refered her to this site and #295 to see a really great Tyler Young spin the Watts' Top.  It was great to watch again.

I really enjoyed watching Tyler Spin the #295 Watts' Top again.  I was reminded that it his birthday is today (or was yesterday).
Wishing you Tyler Young a Happy Birthday and a great future spinning. :)
