Kite Top or Top with a Dragon Tail
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:00:55 PM »

Inspired by the Kongzhus with trailing wind socks (I bet they are called dragon tails) I tried it with a top.  I tied 2 feet of ribbon to the upper bearing tip of a Giulia:

It worked better than I expected. This is a little video playing with it:

Kite Top - Spinning top with a tail

I was starting and stopping the camera and at some point I messed up, so instead of several tricks I did at the end, I just had footage of me winding the top :( In the lost footage I threw it in the air and caught the ribbon with my left hand, threw it again and continued playing.

It is quite fun to play.  The brain starts to keep track of not only where the top and the string are, but you become aware of the ribbon and how to avoid it.

That's pretty sweet!

Now, I would expect the ribbon to twist and turn quite rapidly with the top, but instead it seems to dangle freely as the spintop spins. Is the ribbon's knot very loose, then, or am I just not perceiving its motion correctly?

Thanks!

The upper tip has a very good bearing and the ribbon is relatively heavy, so it doesn't spin with the top.

By the way, I was using a one way bearing on the lower tip.  So I could regenerate but still do multiple around the world without losing too much spin.

This thing is addictive!  It is so much fun to redo the classic tricks like corkscrew using this top.  And by catching the ribbon with the hand new things are possible . . .   Try it!

I also want to replace the ribbon with a fire wick and try a different type of fire top  >:D

hi Jorge !
you seem to enjoy yourself so much with this new add-on !! ;D ;D
for me i don't like tails , on kites especially ...here,  it sorts of focuses the attention of the viewer toward the tail moves and one could forget it's a spintop that drags it... but definitely worth experimenting including unexpected items :a feather, some churros, a used copy of infinite illusions catalog ...

thanx for showing us

I had never thought of kite tails as detrimental to the kite, but I now I can see your point, Jim.  When I saw the kongzhus with their trailing wind socks it looked like just poi swinging.  And I guess something similar happens to the top.  Still, it is fun to do.

Perhaps, instead of the ribbon, a shorter string attached to the upper tip would allow new moves while keeping the "top" feel. I think much more experimentation is required.
