TV interview of the Top Lady
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:23:31 PM »

Here is a TV interview of the "Top Lady", Judith Schulz, from the Top Museum of Burlington, Wisconsin (click on the link on the upper left corner of the page to see the actual video):

Most of the tops she shows are finger and pump tops. Some reminded me Toycrafter tops.

Interesting interview.  Thanks, Jorge.  I was quite fascinated with her comment about being flown to Verona, Italy to compete against five men from Sicily and "she kept up with them".  I would love to know more about this competition.

Nice to see Judith again.  She was part of my early introduction to my drug of choice - spinning tops!  I was already making tops, and went to see her - she was on of my customers, and we were doing a show relatively nearby.  I think she had around 600 back then, and I was amazed!  Several of the tops in the video are mine, including the opening scene flipover top!  She is still using the original Rubbermaid turntable tray we used to provide with each display of flipovers.

Too bad this interview is lost.  I have been thinking about Judith Schulz recently as Don Olney's collection has a picture of her with the world's largest spinning top.  Also, Don gives her credit for inspiring him to collect tops.

I did find this article where Illinois Wesleyan is honoring her:

It's a pity that the video is not available anymore. I have a recording of the show Believe or Not where she was featured. I could upload it to youtube (but the quality is pretty bad).

Good article from just 3 months ago.
The large red top on the photo looks like the one you got from Don, doesn't it?

I'm looking for that Ripley’s Believe it or Not video, but I'm not sure where I saved it.

Found it and uploaded it. Here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1g9jB1r1yo

I recorded this myself from TV in the early 2000s. It was probably a re-run and not the original airing. I think the original was from the late 1990s. I have a photocopy of a local newspaper (Standard Press) article (undated) describing the taping of the segment. It says that a director and a camera crew of 3 was 10 hours filming, with 11 different setups.

Yes, thanks for the information, the great picture and the video.  I have now watched that video several times.  A film crew of three filming for 10 hours with 11 setups is amazing!!!

I did get the same big red top she has.  Don also had a nice base (very heavy) so it stands on the tip quite nicely.

My wife always asks what I REALLY want for Christmas so this year I am asking for time to take a trip up to visit the Top Museum in Burlington, Wisconsin.  The odd thing is that I am not sure it is open during the week when I have time to go there.

Wow!!!  I just got off the phone with Judith Schulz and when I looked at my phone I was stunned to see we talked for 40 minutes.  I am trying to work a visit up there in my schedule before the hectic season of Lent so I called her and we covered a number of great topics.  I will talk more about the conversation later but right now I just wanted to update this thread and get it up to the top of the list so she can see it and maybe add to our conversation.

That's wonderful news, Mike. I hope you can see her. It's at the top of my list of top places in the US that I have not yet visited.
