Stairway/case to Heaven help :-)
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:21:14 AM »

So I'm getting kind of frustrated with it. :-\

I can do the whole trick great until the part where I land the top on my hand at the end.
The spinning motion of the corkscrew makes it fly through the air... or hit me in the jaw! ::)
Just to clarify, the top is not coming off of the string in the middle of the trick.
I have tried to do 3-8 wraps and the number didn't help.
I have tried very tight wraps and very loose wraps.

Exactly what happens at the end of this trick? ???
I must be missing something.

Using Giulia. (Fixed tip ;D)

Any help would be appreciated.

So you let the button hang a little to give you slack at the end? ???

I'll try that.
Thanks :)

I've been facing similar issues with this trick, and haven't yet managed to get it consistent... I'll try this suggestion too! ;D

Also, I recommend practicing this trick with a tip with a narrow neck (the tip of Salvador (the spintops of Spintastics) is perfect for practice).
I say this because having narrower neck, tops runs more slowly by the string  ;)

Good tip, Muzico, I will have to try that myself.  I can do the trick, but the end is always the hardest part.  What seems to work for me is to slow the rotation by moving my arm with the rotation of the top, while pushing up to launch the top above my hand just a few inches.  Throwing it up a little gives time to adjust the hand and get back underneath.

The way the creator does it (Ta0), it does not pop up off his hand, it just stays on the string and perches on top of his hand like some sort of obedient lizard.  I think Muzico's tip will help.

I'm glad I'm not the only one baffled by the obedient lizard effect. :P

If the top hits your face at the end of the trick I would say you are not doing the real trick. The top has to climb well above your head, with the arm stretched up.  And ideally it should end up spinning there (although sometimes even I lower my hand to save the top). That is what it gives the trick all its flair.

I'll try to record and post a video in the next couple of days of a correctly done Staircase to Heaven using a Gulia.

Muzico's suggestion of leaving extra string in the hand is good advice to avoid ending with the top trapped in a bind that kills the spin. What I do is I hold the button at the end of my fingers.

Ta0 is very particular about his staircase. Remember heaven is above your head. The trick should end looking liking the fist pump at the end of The Breakfast Club.

Perhaps the biggest secret of S to H is that what makes it spectacular also helps doing it. By raising the hand you force the top to climb and that slows it down while at the same time tightens the bind, and both things help in keeping the top on the string. Normally if you bind a top harder it will run faster on the string and this way you avoid that.

I tried S to H today using a Giulia. I confess I rarely play with the Giulia in fixed mode. It does have a lot of climbing power, I guess because of a high ration of spinning inertia to weight. So it tends to really fly on the string and you have to try to limit its speed. I tried to keep the arm still with none of the pumping that I may do with the HP. When I created the trick I was using a Spintastic sidewinder and it felt more like this.  I would also advice to do a lose walk between the arms so the top does not start the corkscrew at high speed.

I filmed this 3-wrap S to H today using a Gulia while I was fighting a swarm of mosquitoes  >:(

Staircase to Heaven spintop trick

Unfortunately, I don't have any "secret" advice specifically on the landing on the hand.
