Oh nooooooo!!!  :(
So sorry to hear about the accident..... But it is true, every outstanding achievement comes at the price of sacrifice!
Hope you recover promptly, Joe, what incredible dedication to the project...

And 19 minutes may not be 45, but still is extremely impressive!

From what I read Pastor Joe has come out of surgery with no problems.  There is a picture of him in the hospital and he looks good.  There was a skull fracture, but a small one.

The top did spin. Byron Watts is there (Manila, Phillipenes) and writes this about the video of the event.

"Byron T. Watts - Just attempted an upload from Manila hotel. The time of upload from this location is estimated to be 24 hours...and the time was incrementing. The problem is, my airplane leaves (and I trust I'll be on it) in about 7 hours."

Thanks for the update Rick!
It is really good to hear that surgery went well.

Don Olney wrote the following on face book
Don Olney
Some of this is repeat, but wanted to update.

For those of my friends who have not been following this remarkable story, there was an attempt yesterday at spinning the world's largest spinning top. The attempt was successful after a rather spectacular initial failure! I've attached a picture of my friend Joe Mauk after successful surgery to repair the result of that failure!

It took a long time to collect the story, but here it is.

There was a cracked gear in the winch that was to lift the weight .... the falling of which was planned to start the top spinning. Due to that defective gear, the winch sort of exploded. The weight was about 3000 pounds! Three pieces of metal shot out. One went into the crowd without damage. One imbedded itself in the top, and the third struck my friend Joe Mauk in the head. (Joe is is the one who put together this whole spectacular attempt.) He is basically fine now after a few hours of surgery to remove a 2" dia. cracked section of his skull, some pieces of his hat, and other debris! Hopefully they left in that cracked part of his being that loves to tackle the impossible! Later surgery will plug up the hole!

At this point, all communication via the net switched to info about Joe, but I finally collected the rest of the story ----- after some discussion, 12 guys picked up the rope, and ran with it! The result was a 19 minute spin that should meet the criteria of the Guinness folks for a world record that should be tough to beat. I have to give a lot of credit to Treavor (?) who "turned" the top. A 19 minute spin for a top that big that was sort of "fenced" in, but not actually held in place is a remarkable feat of balance!

There is video which will be uploaded later. Due to the size of the video, there appear to be some problems!

God bless all the crazy people of the world who push the boundaries of what can be done!

Epic!!!

There should be a Manila TV story airing this Monday.  Hopefully it will be available online.

Looking forward to reading Joe's comments when he feels well enough.

I knew there was a good reason for mentioning Joe during concerns at church this morning.  Some body tell Joe that it does not take a hole in the head to do the things we do for fun and fame.   ;)

On the question of getting it out of the building, they did actually dig out a hole in the ground to lower it down under the roof line to get it out! See attached picture.  Also picture of Joe after surgery with a surgical drain that looks suspiciously like an upside down top coming out of his head.  There are a huge number of pictures on Facebook accessible if you friend Byron T. Watts.

Dimensions if not posted yet.

Dia. 10 ft. 11 59/64th inches
Circ. 37 ft. 5 inches
Height. 12fl. 8 3/4 inches

I don't think they got to weigh it.  They  tried once inside the building but there wasn't enough room above the top for the scale to hang.  I think they attempted again outside, but I did not see any info on results.  Pre-spin estimate was 900 pounds?

Joe's post after surgery,

"I am feeling fine, had a great cup of coffee this morning, which immediately raised both my temperature and blood pressure!- still all in the normal range. As to what hit me, the impact was colossal, unbelievable to describe, surprising I wasn't knocked out, the only impact I've had similar but smaller was being hit in the face by a crank handle in Australia back in 1977, so I thought the winch crank handle must have hit me. Now we have discovered that one of the gear boxes for the winch/tower assembly exploded when the cable snagged and the weight jerked with excessive force. One significant piece hit me and one piece hit the top itself and so it also has a scar! Thankfully no one else was touched, I am so tremendously thankful for that."

The following was posted as a comment on Joe's FB page by a fellow pastor -- Don MacKay

Mike will love this!

"The Reverend was nestled all snug in his bed,
For pieces of winch gear were stuck in his head,
And Ma with her Sunglasses, I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long Sunday's nap.

For out at Rizal there arose such a clatter,
Folks sprang all around to see what was the matter.
Away to the Hospital they flew like a flash,
With police escort ahead Cause He had such a gash.

But what to all's wondering eyes did appear,
The World's Biggest Top, Spinning 19 Minutes Here;
With many bright days still to spin for his Lord ,
Joe Mauk must delay his eternal reward. : )"

Thanks a lot Don for the update!

The big hole in the ground to take out the top is hilarious!

It was a bad accident but very lucky: it could easily have ended in a tragedy. Fortunately it didn't and it is now a great story!
