I was just thinking, in order to get the patches, you have to use a Spintastics brand top (clever marketing tactic, Dale). Also, it is hard to complete the three over and three under, required for crazy 8's, using a ripcord. That might explain the trouble you are experiencing. The trick looks a lot cleaner and is easier (MUCH, IMHO) to do with a bearing tip.

You have a birthday on the horizon? Maybe you could ask for a fixed tip Trompo Grande and a bearing tip Blizzard. Those are the tops I began to get serious with. They are excellent. Another good option is to get the Trompo Grande Bearing Tip and also order a fixed tip along with it, for conversionation. In my opinion, the first option is better because you get two tops, but I am just trying to offer options.
