A Boy, His Top, and a Tow Truck.
« on: December 03, 2011, 10:32:40 PM »

So, the other day one of my kids walked back on to the school campus, with his mother, after having been previously picked up.  The mother approached me, and the boy followed as he proceeded to use his sleeve to wipe his tear stained face.  As the mother drew into view, I notice she was holding a broken spin-top.  Upon closer inspection, I could see that the bottom portion of the spin-top (a Spintastics blizzard) looked somewhat normal, but the top portion was smashed into bits, most of which were dangling from the mangled tape or nestled inside the remaining bottom half of the top.   When I asked what had happened, the mother explained that the top had dropped from the boys backpack as he was getting into their car, and that it had rolled into the street.   But just as they were going to retrieve it, a tow truck came along and ran over it.   Seeing the disappointment on the boys face, and watching the shock on the faces of  the onlooking children who were crowded around to see what had happened, I figured there was only one thing to say....."COOL, Death By Tow Truck"!

The boy was caught off guard by my comment and shot me a quizzical look.   I explained that another top could always be purchased, but not everyone, in fact no one that I knew, could tell the story of the time their top was run over by a tow truck.  The boys smirk only turned into a full smile when I suggested that he should always keep this top as a trophy .   The mother agreed and the following day the boy had a new top, and a wonderful story to tell....only now, I guess it's my story too ;)

I can imagine some of your kids now throwing their tops into the incoming traffic trying to get a trophy plus a new top: "Wait, Justin, there comes an 18 wheeler . . .  Cool . . .  "  >:D  ;)

Nice story!

Awesome. I think the closest I can come to that is "Death by Steve Brown".

Life is all about good stories.  You are going to be one of those teachers who when 80 years old has old students sending letters, e-mails, pics, etc. to their favorite teacher!  I've got two of those "old" teachers in my life, and I consider myself blessed!
