I can hardly wait!

Eric, I read that when Delrin heats up, it releases an unpleasant fume.  Has this been something you've witnessed?

When roughing the big block of Delrin it's 600 rpm (remember, it weighs....umm weighed... 16 lbs.)....for hollowing/finishing it's 1200-1500 rpm.

Delrin is polymerized formaldehyde.. so that smell when it gets hot is the release of formaldehyde gas.

As long as you have adequate ventilation to keep the formaldehyde concentration below 1 ppm or so you're fine. If not, I would certainly suggest a respirator. It can be very toxic in large quantities, but I wouldn't worry too much with our uses.

Eric you are a mad genius.

Kyo I am glad you are so involved on this board. I know you got a bad wrap on other boards but you seem cool to me.

That depends entirely on who you talk to :)

I always have kinda forgotten about the spintop boards, mostly because I don't consider myself a spintop player.. but over the last few years I've picked it up more and started paying more attention. (certainly a result of spending a lot of time around Eric and other top throwers at worlds.. how can you hang out with those guys and not love tops?)

I can't get over how quickly Eric turns these bad boys out.

It almost has the look/shape of the original STB.

Waiting as patiently as possible...

The "Reveal"

So it's done.......Jim, you were a little off with your guess.....not 4".....6 1/2" in diameter!  And, it looks more like a giant STB 2.0 than a Guilia.....
It weighs slightly over 2 lbs., which while heavy, doesn't play like it's heavy.  I probably should have titled this thread, "How to turn 16 lbs. of Delrin into 2 lbs. of Delrin".......Like the black/red/yellow Delrin top it plays amazingly smoothly.  Since it's white on white on white you almost can't tell that it's spinning when it is.  It has the bearing/fixed convertable tip with a pair of Bones Swiss super clean skateboard bearings.
It took a total of 9 hours to make.....2 to rough turn the outside shape, 5 hours of hollowing (man was that a pain in the a$$), and 2 hours to do the bearing section, finish turning and tip.  I also made a very cool accessory (which took another 1+ hour.....however, said accessory will not be revealled now, you'll have to wait for the next post.... ;D).
It needs a name....a really good name....I've got some ideas, but any and all suggestions will be appreciated.....
So, here it is:

Again, stay tuned!!!
