Get yer grove out
« on: August 25, 2011, 11:10:03 PM »

So you know that huge groove toward the top of a BK / RC
and how annoying it is when the string catches on it and you loose all your spin?
Yeah, I hate that.

As Alan Gray did with the Crystal King,
and our team mascot yocephus did with the original Diet RC,
I have now done my own; meet Red and Green Delicious:

No tape necessary, the cap is permanently glued to the body with gorilla glue.
It now makes a satisfying 'ding' sound when it hits something,
instead of that sick crack or dull thud you normally hear.

Watching Eric Wolff slice away at a Bearing King on his lathe at Worlds
has inspired me to whittle away at some of these parts I have laying around.
Thank you Eric.

I've always wanted to try filling the groove with something instead of removing material.
So I did.  Behold!

Nice work.  There is not a lot of material to remove where the body meets the cap...DAMHIK.  Me thinks this is a better alternative.

So, did you or didn't you fill the groove of a BK? In the photos it seems that you only hollowed the crowns.

One day I will mode the groove of a BK or Ripcord so it works as it should. On the other hand, I almost never throw Duncan . . .

...that's solder where the big groove used to be.  Hard to photograph.

OK, I'll bite...

How in the wide wide world of sports did you:
a. get the solder to stick in the groove
b. get the suface of the solder smooth and flush with the body?

Enquiring (if slightly dull) minds want to know!

I am glad you asked, poptop. I was wondering that myself, after figuring out that filling the groove meant filling a side groove, not the magic winding groove  :-[

Sorry folks, didn't mean to be vauge  :)

I put it on the lathe, cut a deeper groove so that half of the solder wire will fit in it.
Then cut the solder ring to fit with a small gap where the ends meet.
Mix some 5 minute epoxy and apply it into the groove, use a clamp to hold the ring in place while you solder the ends together.
Wait.
The solder cuts real easy on the lathe.

I've done a few more in plastic other than clear, will try to get more photos up.

Sorry but I do not speak English and I have to use a google translator, and I can not understand some things, thanks for using your time to explain the process.
Thank you very much, it's hard for me to understand some words. :-[

No worries trompillo - I don't think anybody understood what I was trying to show.
The photo isn't very clear, and I didn't leave much information.

This photo is a little better?
