Kansas State Yo-Yo Contest 2011 - top action!
« on: May 08, 2011, 10:11:54 PM »

So, one of my former pupils Blake Freeman has established the annual Kansas State Yo-Yo contest which just took place this weekend.  It was awesome.  I was a judge along with Hank Freeman, Rick Wyatt, and Andrew Conde.  The fabulous Takeshi was there also and  GUESS WHO ELSE?!?!

DAVEID

Even though that top doesn't have a tip yet, it is amazing what Daveid can do without a lathe

So anyway, Takeshi, Daveid, and I each took 2 minutes on stage competing for audience applause, and Tacky won by a good margin despite very descent runs by Daveid and I.  I didn't have much time to take pictures, but I think somebody got some video of our stage time, I'll try to get a hold of it...

Daveid sighting!!!!! Nice to see you, man!

Is that a string and glue top?  :o  8) Looks fantastic! What do you want to trade for one of those???

By the way, isn't Nebraska just north of Kansas?  ;)

I have memories of standing around Daveid and he was giving us some information about his glue and string tops.  If I remember right, he said he used lots and lots of super glue.  When asked where he got so much, he said "I have my sources".

He always made me laugh with those kind of humorous responses.

Chris did you meet a guy named Nick Cevito(sp?) there?  I think he took first or second in a division.  He's also a pretty decent spinner and hosts the KC juggling fest.

Yes, I've known Nick and Nadine for a couple of years now, actually I stayed at their house Saturday night.  Great guy, great gal, great couple.  Nick spins a top very well.  He also was working at Infinite Illusions at the same time as Lao Alvus... he witnessed the creation of the corkscrew.  Nick is the guy I think has video of the spin top freestyles.

KS States was a huge success and it was pretty awesome to see some top players there.  I was running around filming and helping out where I could and wasn't able to hang out as much as I would have liked with Daveid.  That dude can throw!  His left-handed right-hand throw is so amazing.

Yeah, I think any top player could look at the 'top contest' and know that Neff should have won, Daveid in second and me in 3rd.  But whatever, it's my first contest win!  YAY!  So I'm countin' it :)

When any of us spin tops on stage, the audience usually have question marks over their heads.  Takeshi is the best at turning the question marks into exlamation points.  Definately a win, bro!
