classic movie "To Kill A Mockingbird" and top spinning
« on: October 06, 2010, 03:58:26 AM »

That great and classic movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" was on the other night.  In the opening scene there is a box of toys that the camera slowly scans over while showing the credits.  I watched very closely to see if there were any top related items.  I did see a jack (they spin nicely) but no spinning tops that I could find.  Like a box I had similar to this growing up, there were plenty of marbles.

As I was starting to doze late in the evening they came back to the box of toys and I tried to watch very closely again.  At first I thought it was a dream, but as the child went through the items there was a very obvious shot of a peg top with string!  I couldn't believe it and was so pumped up about it I went to sleep and forgot about it!!!

I don't recall anyone ever mentioning this before on this forum.

Here is a link to a video that includes the opening credits and the box of toys.  I can't see a top in this, although it looks like it might go by some string at one point.

I am having trouble getting this to work.  Sorry!

I put "to kill a mockingbird and spinning top" in google and came up with this teacher's guide: http://www.recordedbooks.com/school_flyers/43300-KillMockingbird-TG.pdf

The teacher's guide has a quiz with the following question:

6. What are some things Jem and Scout find in the tree throughout the book?
a. broken watch, soap dolls, pennies, gum
b. gum, a note, fishing twine, a spinning top
c. a watch, hard candy, one dollar, a book

My wife just watched this movie.  I was all excited to talk to her about the top that was in the box of knick knacks later in the movie, but guess what?  She didn't even  notice that there was a peg top in that box.  Dagnabbit!  Why can't she have a sharp eye for tops like the rest of us?  We could have so many other great conversations if she would just be willing to open her eyes to the top side of life!!!

The big news in the life section of USA Today is the sequel that is coming out July 14.  "Go Set a Watchman" is the follow up to "To Kill a Mockingbird".  In this book by Harper Lee twenty years have passed for the main character Scout.  One expert writes "I think it will be big.  I think it will be gargantuan if it has any of the texture and interest and quality of 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'"

Sadly, I do not expect to have any surprise top sightings which means ta0 can go ahead and put this in the NSTR section.

Well, sad news.  The author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" died.  Harper Lee was 89 and her book has sold more than 40 million copies.  Rumor has it that when she died they found a little top on her nightstand.......a momento from the movie (would that be enough to get this back in the current event section?).
