YYF tops availability and design flaw
« on: September 12, 2010, 09:47:16 AM »

YYF sold all its remaining stock of Throwbacks and Acrobats to Yoyoexpert.com (André Boulay). According to André, he has about 30 Acrobats and 20 Throwbacks left. Unfortunately, the Throwbacks are all in the display case so they cost $150. The Acrobats are $100 (even the inkblot design, I believe).

In Spain I discovered a design flaw about these tops. It was Sunday night and I went to the festival to see the awards and the final circus show. I put my Acrobat, a relatively small top, in a pocket just in case the need to throw a top came up, as it surely did. But when I tried to throw it I could not take all the string out of the top! I had the string stored inside but a knot had formed bigger than the hole! Of course, the stronger I pulled the tighter the knot became. So I ended up without a top to spin >:( I still need to figure out how to take the string out.

I remember Javier trying to introduce the string into the hole and telling how much boring was it.

I heard back from them yesterday (Sunday, 12 September) here is what they said...

"Yes - we actually are working on a complete spin top section on our website with a wide variety including the YoYoFactory Throwback and Acrobat tops.  Should be available within the next two weeks - announcement on our blog soon.  Please let us know if you have anymore questions.  Thanks!"

are they good tops?
They are excellent tops, very high quality and performance. Unfortunately, the price is still too steep, in my opinion, specially if you are forced to buy the Throwback in the display box. And, who would want two display boxes? On the other hand, if somebody wants to sell a (used or new) red Throwback by itself, I am interested.

ta0, u may consider burning the string to get it out, unless the top can be opened up to remove the string. just a thought.

Thanks for the advice but using surgical-style scissors and pliers I cut the knot and could pull out the string.

I can't believe Jorge passed on the fire idea.  I know how much he likes flames coming from tops!

YYF also made some aluminum replacement tips for both bearing and fixed play but I only know of Eric getting (a bunch of) them. Eric was modding them at worlds last year and giving them away.

The bearing is the same size, and the diameter matches up pretty good where the top of the S8 tip would meet the aluminum.  Two bearings stack right on top of each other in the YYF tops, no space between, but the right size spacer and washer could make it work.  Problem is, you can't get the cap off, and the hole in the crown is too small to get a ratchet through to get the nut on  :'(
