Detail of the top...

One reason I make so few tops is that I have little free time.
My real job is making moulds of sculptures, which is what leaves me with little free time;
this is the last one I made, (mould + gypsum cast).
I don't believe playing with tops can turn people homosexual in any way, (like it seems some people in Japan believed long time ago), so you can enjoy the nice sculpture.
In the background the lathe, (oiled and covered with cellophane to prevent rust);
I am making other moulds now but I can't wait to start making my next top !    :)

This is the reason I bought the top man!!! Just saved my shoulder by taking the 4inch!!!

The spintastic steel tip is worthless when it comes to elevators!!! Changed it last night for a brass but night was over, will try some more today!!!

Iacopo's work, like always, is amazing.  Thanks for being so willing to share it with us.

By the way, I wish I could take credit for that "happiness runs in a circular motion" phrase but it comes from an old camp song I learned years ago.  And before that, it was a popular song written and sung by Donovan.  It makes a great round.  Thanks for referring to it.  I would love to play it on the piano at worlds but I am not sure I will be allowed to touch the keys!!!

Found the top container and contents called Ptolemy's top.  I took it to Sunday School and fooled around with it a bit.  Looks like what I have is the same in Lourens's collection.  The little piece of rubber that runs along the track is in pretty bad shape.  I am not sure if I need it.  There are also discs of different designs one can use.  They do not fit over that rubber piece.

I never thought I would enjoy so much spinning a finger top, but there is something fulfilling in imparting energy to such a well balanced object.

My LEGO finger tops are in no way comparable to Iacopo's masterpieces. But the better performers still give me a satisfaction similar to the one you describe. There's something special and intimate about the way a good finger top interacts with the hand during the twirl and the eye afterward. Like the Earl says,

Quote
Happiness goes in a circular motion.

I too had a bike in college and almost did not get to marry Bev when I told her mother she road with me! But at My first duty station Bev had a job at the local hospital as a Med Tech. She was called in to work on a sailor that tried to take out a tree with his Cycle. After that she told me that I could get another bike when I had a hand full of cash big enough to pay for it. She has never let me have that much money.

I can relate! Went out to buy a new Nissan 300Z sports car for myself when Kathy was pregnant with our 2nd kid. Really wanted a turbo, but it only came in the 2-seater. On my way out the door, she said,

Have fun, dear! Just remember -- you can buy a 2-seater, but you can't come home in a 2-seater.

So, got the 2+2 with kid-sized back seats instead. Turns out, the normally aspirated 2+2 was a lot more fun to drive anyway, as it had more low-end torque and no turbo lag.
