I'm about to buy string in a string specialised shop.

What should I ask for??

Cotton and... thickness?? Anything else??

Post on the yo-yo boards. It's more likely that someone there is willing to separate from one. If you can, hit Yuki or Miguel as at the time they got tops to demo.

Thanks. I did post on the Facebook yoyo BSTs and YYE. Miggy responded on Facebook but couldn’t find the top. I’ll try Yuuki.

Anyone had tried the Tippie top (fig 3) mentioned in the paper??
I would love to see a video!

This is equivalent to the disc with a ball top:

or the reverse:

Video of this elegant B&W top set at https://kunstbaron.de/en/spinning-top-illusion-op-tric.html, where it's still sold.
Good find that website, although the video itself is terrible (over-exposed and only shows some strobe effects due to the camera).
I need to ask somebody else if they see colors on these tops. I just spun them over a white paper, and after careful observation I could see on one of them a pink band at low speed that later changes to a cyan color and on another one a light green band. No colors on the other three. In contrast, I see several rings in clear reds and greens on The Toycrafter version.

The site has other tops from Naef for sale, as well as tops from well known top artist Armin Kolb (member of this forum) and Christoff Guttermann another top artist (whose statements about tops remind me those of Philippe Dyon). It includes a spinning top table by Guttermann for the serious top spinner (560 euros including VAT but plus shipping)  :o :

To my own disbelief, I just landed one whip from trapeze... I was looking at the top and the string not understanding what was going on!!!  :D

I need to continue working on it!!!
Cheers!

...the  last one did a 55 sec sleeper !

Never tire of watching tops that behave like that gas cartridge! I call them "gyrophonic" for the whirring sounds they make -- especially on a resonant surface.

By now have made many LEGO versions. The key ingredients appear to be...
(1) Large center of mass (CM) to contact distance relative to top's maximum diameter.
(2) Large TMI/AMI ratio, where TMI = transverse moment of inertia about the tip, and AMI = axial moment of inertia (about spin axis).
(3) Ball tip or equivalent (as in your gas cartridge).

The ball tip (3) is essential -- and within limits, the larger radius of curvature, the better. Properties (1) and (2) generally go hand-in-hand, but not always.

I have this set of optical illusion tops from Naef...

Video of this elegant B&W top set at https://kunstbaron.de/en/spinning-top-illusion-op-tric.html, where it's still sold. If the price tag weren't 78 Euros, I'd buy one!

Ah ha!!!  I was waiting for that.  I figured a trip like this was right up your alley.  I wondered if you were going to confess it or not!!!

I wanted to start this dream thread because every once in a while I have a crazy spin top themed dream and I am wondering if others also have them.  My guess is that Ketzaltlipoka has had some.  I must admit, I had a number of disturbing dreams while first unpacking Don's collection.  I am doing better with that now but I am trying to remember some of them for your entertainment?

Interestingly enough, Armstrong's hometown is just an hour north of me (Miamisburg, Ohio).  Good old Wapakoneta.  Like Mburg, not too many Wapaks around.  I checked them out on the internet and it looks like they are going to do things up pretty big on July 20th, the 50th anniversary!!!

Could be a lot of fun! Are you thinking about going?
