Title: You think the traffic on your commute is bad?
Post by: Jeremy McCreary on March 28, 2021, 12:03:03 PM
Been on the Suez lately? (https://twitter.com/JonHansenTV/status/1375538035551522821?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1375538035551522821%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2Flive%2F2021%2F03%2F28%2Fworld%2Fsuez-canal-stuck-ship)

The New York Times just reported that the Ever Given has been partially refloated.

PS: Per the NYT, the ship is now free!

Yes, there is a sizeable article about this in the USA Today paper.  Sounds like lots of cheering and happy people when it was freed.  It says the canal carries more than 10% of world trade.  German insurer Allianz estimated the cost of the blockage at up to $10 billion a day!!!

What about the traffic in 1906?:

I didn't see any pegtops, but I didn't look carefully.
This was taken during the short period of time when horse drawn vehicles and motorized vehicles coexisted. I only took about a decade for one to replace the other one.
We are starting a similar decade when internal combustion cars driven by humans will be largely replaced by self-driven electric cars!  :o

Fascinating.  I will watch it much closer in a couple of days.

Man, I saw a zillion wheels I'd love to turn into tops there! Trolley wheel top. Wagon wheel top. Model T wheel top. Bicycle wheel top. That'd be some top collection!

As for the traffic, good thing cars and ships don't cross paths very often.

Model T wheel top.
The Ford Model T wasn't made until October 1908.
On the other hand, it's possible there were some steamers and electric cars there. From Wikipedia:

Quote
In the United States by the turn of the century, 40 percent of automobiles were powered by steam, 38 percent by electricity, and 22 percent by gasoline. A total of 33,842 electric cars were registered in the United States, and the U.S. became the country where electric cars had gained the most acceptance. Most early electric vehicles were massive, ornate carriages designed for the upper-class customers that made them popular. They featured luxurious interiors and were replete with expensive materials. Sales of electric cars peaked in the early 1910s.
