Title: Gift top for Christmas
Post by: Renee on December 24, 2018, 10:06:14 AM
A family member gave me this top for Christmas.  They were told that it's from the 1920's.  The ball shape tip has a vertical seam.  The crown has been modified.  It looks like it was hand chiseled.

You are lucky. It is important to have a family who think in you.

Enjoy and Happy Christmas

That's a fun present.  It's interesting how it has been whittled around the crown!!!

Very thoughtful present!

The tip is metal, isn't it?

Is it my imagination, or is there a number (patent date?) on the crown?

Yes the tip is metal.  And I don't think there are any numbers on the crown, just lathe marks.  But I will take a closer look.

Very nice gift. Wondering if the whittling around the edges of the flat shoulder could have been for balancing purposes? For one thing, less conspicuous than shaving off mass elsewhere.

Maybe the original crown rim split.

I would guess they were having issues with the string falling off the crown when winding. I think they tried making the crown longer to prevent this.

I agree with Jose.  I am happy to say there is lots of good news over in Miamisburg this Christmas.  My youngest son with his family is in town from North Carolina.  The Hall of Fame was open for a bit and many ideas were thrown out for possible games to try.  Tornado Rex was the winner and a great time was had by all.  These 12 days of Christmas are going to be terrific!!!
