Title: Hand carved top video
Post by: Hades on June 04, 2018, 11:25:25 PM
Forgive me if this has been posted before. Guy makes a top pretty much with nothing but a machete.

I don't remember seeing this before.  Fun video.  Nice cat and ukelele!

There is something special about carving a top out of a piece of wood.  It looks back on a time years ago when there were no machines to produce fine spinners like we have today.  I have made a few and it gives me a unique sense of accomplishment and connects me with our fun history.  I just used a simple knife, though.  His accuracy with that machete is impressive!!!

Pretty good top for one that was carved!

I remember the one you entered on the spintop maker's contest at worlds in Orlando. I believe now it's on display at the spintop HOF.

But, if you want to go really primitive, before the availability of plastic tops, kids in Mexico used broken bottles to carve the tops out of a branch. The nail tips were sharpened against the curbside.

Maybe not as beautiful as the ones made my Iacapo(Sorry if I spelled it wrong), but at the same time, there's still beauty in the simplicity of this top.

I love his methods of using leverage.  Pounding the machete into the door frame is funny and clever.
